Stephen A. Smith; ANYBODY like him?

Post#1 » by Miller4ever » Wed Jun 18, 2008 6:06 am

I don't know what it is about this guy, but he's been pissing me off from the moment I first saw him say something about the pathetic draft choice that someone or another made a few years ago. This guy talks like he knows everything, and that his opinion is fact. He also uses "O'Reilly" tactics, where he shouts people down who tend to disagree. He's annoying to listen to, and rounds out a sub-performing ESPN basketball crew, consistently getting beat out by Sir Charles, Kenny Smith, and good old Ernie. What does the "A." Stand for? I can think of a few fitting nouns that would go perfectly in there, and one of them rhymes with gas-pole.

I want to punch him in the face to make him shut up forever. Has anyone seen those youtube videos with those guys making fun of him on draft night. You could tell that he's so full of himself and that he has no sense of humor. The fact that people like him exist makes me sad.

Yet he is still better than 99% of the "analysts" ABC/ESPN puts out there.

I have been saying for a while now that he is the Bill O' Reilly of sportscasting in pretty much every way.

Usually no. A main reason being because he doesn't care that much about the defensive side of the game.

I can't hear this thread over Stephen A. Smith's shouting... you'll have to speak up.

He's wrong a lot, but the way he just embarrasses certain players -- usually scrubs -- I've never seen from anyone else. For example, when he was asked if the Lakers gave up too much for Pau Gasol after the trade... that was classic Stephen A.

I like S.A.S. I agree his screaming has gone beyond the bounds of necessity, but you know its coming.

Watching Screamin A do his thing is like watching the daily show. Sure, you know you're not getting "news" even though they have the actual stories. But at least you do know what kind of spin he's putting on it unlike the rest of these craphead analysts that try to pass off their opinion as fact. SAS has some of the best basketball connections of any of the analysts, and he's not afraid to tell it like he sees it. He has a lot of redeeming qualities that the other announcers lack, but you miss it b/c of the screaming.

Cheez Doodles!

In small doses, he's amusing. He did some nice shorts with Doc and Paul Pierce after the title that were pretty nice.

He's up and down, hit or miss; he's exuberant and sometimes (often) says ridiculous things, probably just for effect. That's who he is. Sometimes he is really irritating but sometimes he's a pretty interesting interviewer and commentator.

I just like the fact that you know what you're getting with him. It's his raw, unadulterated opinion, and its derived from a lot of personal dialogue with people closest to the game.

It's 20x better than all these talking heads with thier hidden agendas. They try to use those ridiculous Elias Sports Bureau stats to make points that aren't even legitmate.

I'm not saying he's not knowledgeable or that he doesn't make excellent points sometimes. It's just that he lacks a certain respect for other's opinions.

Ok, time to be honest. If you were doing halftime commentary for ESPN basketball, would you have respect for any of the other commentator's opinions?
