Packers experimenting with the 3-4?

Post#1 » by ReasonablySober » Fri Jun 20, 2008 9:04 pm

# Without divulging what the situation and other personnel were, the Packers had four linebackers on the field at one point: Brandon Chillar, A.J. Hawk, Nick Barnett and Brady Poppinga. I saw that on more than one occasion during the mini-camp.

That's very interesting. Barnett and Brady inside and Hawk and Chillar outside I'm assuming? I love that MM explores every possiblity. Although I don't see a change coming, I do expect them to bust out the 3-4 once in awhile to confuse opponents perhaps? Nevertheless, it's great to see coach mixing things up.

Brady's probably the best pass rusher of the four. I imagine he and Hawk would be on the outside.

Jason Wilde was on 1510 today talking about this. They aren't going to convert to the 3-4. He envisions Chillar beating out Poppinga for the 3rd LB spot. Pop would then come in on passing downs and they would show different looks with 4 LBs. Sometimes Pop will start 3-4 yards off of the line, and sometimes he will line up on the line in a 3 PT and turn into a hybrid DE.

I don't see them going to a 3-4 any time soon. They were probably just looking to throw a different kind of defnese at the offense. You know, just mix things up a bit. If we did play the 3-4, Hawk and Barnett would be in the middle and Poppinga and Chillar on the outsides.

This is just one of the advantages of us not having a lot of turnover on our defense. All of our starters are really familiar with the base system now to the point that it's almost second nature. That is enabling us to throw in these extra blitzes and wrinkles.
