I don't think you can define a PG between shoot first and pass first that easily. As long as the PG does its job, who cares whether he scored 30 points or made 15 assists?

You could argue they needed Eddie House more than they needed Rajon Rondo to win this title.

They were playing 5 on 4 defense against the Celtics until House came in and confused the hell out of the Lakers (and exposed Kobe Bryant's defense).

Rondo is not a 'pass first' PG by any stretch. He passes the ball so much because he plays with Pierce, Ray Ray and KG. It also doesn't help that he has no jumpshot. He is just doing his job and doing it well. One thing I'd say is he is a 'defense first' PG.

The bigger story is that the PG position is overrated PERIOD.

PG was no better than FOURTH BEST PLAYER on either team in the Finals.

Out of the 16 teams who made the playoffs, PG was only the most efficient player on 2 of them.

In fact there are only 5 teams you could even make an argument for of the 16 who made the playoffs where PG is the best player on the team. That's less than 33% folks.

And saying 5 is being VERY liberal.

This has always been a league that has been dominated by post play with the exception being the greatness known as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and the Detroit Pistons backcourt (past and present). So outside two of the 3 greatest players to ever play the game (although Magic did have another top 5 player of all time much of the way) and outside the Bad Boy Pistons and new Pistons ( who have one of most balanced top 5s you'll ever see), it's all about the post play.

So this hooplah around the draft about Derrick Rose over Beasley because PG is the more important position is nothing more than complete bullsh**

FWIW Riley read this thread and wanted to post so I did it for him

"Pure point guards? That's not the way the game is being played today," Riley said as he continued deliberations over the Heat's No. 2 selection. "You take a look at Steve Nash; his head's under the rim more than anybody in the league."

Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Wow, this is ridiculous. Rondo isn't "pass-first," he's scared of shooting. Nobody with that much hesitation and uncertainty is a pass-anything point guard. He just gets rid of the ball. Turning down a layup to kick out for a three isn't a playmaking skill, its plain stupidity.

Good posting. I would like to extend the discussion into the salary impact a PG should have. The main traits of a PG aren't "expensive". Which championship PG was the highest-paid player on the team? Parker in 2007 is the most expensive PG I can recall. Heck, we had awesome (expensive) duos in Malone/Stockton, Payton/Kemp as well as Kidd and Iverson with rotative partners which couldn't manage to win it all.

Maybe a PG should not be a jack-of-all-trades superstar, but a specialist who excels in certain areas (mainly leadership, ballhandling, catch&shoot, man-to-man and pressing defense).

Rondo's jump shot will improve dramatically, it already has from his rookie to sophomore season. Watch out for the 3rd year Rajon Rondo in 2008/2009.
