Stern has gone over the edge
I know this has been kicking around for a while, but Stern needs to drop this meaningless suit against Donaghy. The NBA is asking for money back for the cost of the shoes they supplied him for games.

Since the NBA is so litiguous, I'm going to start a class action suit against them to get my money back for any games I attended when Donaghy reffed. My attorney Jackie Chiles is on the case.

I can't wait to see what happens. The last time he said restitution would be 1 million, then donaghy comes out with the new allegations about games being rigged.
Now Stern ups it 400,000 more, so let's see what Donaghy responds with.
One thing is for sure, mr stern is one arrogant man who will continue to try to flex his muscles...

I do not see how upping the lawsuit is arrogance. If untrue, it could be defamation because it calls into question the very authenticity of games played. This could lead to lower sales etc due to a lack of trust.

Re: Stern has gone over the edge
Stern is doing the same thing all of us would. Sticking it to Donaghy. The guy wants to bash the nba, Will then the nba will bash him in the only way they can, With money. You want to walk around and act all mighty will then, The nba is taking your shoes. If your girl friend Cheats on you, Will you just drop itand let her keep the dog? No your taking everything your entitled to. She wants to talk bad about you in bed, You let everyone know that she slept with the whole City. lol You guys act all mighty but im pretty sure most of you guys would be doing the same thing David Stern is doing now.

you're right, arrogant was probably not the correct word to use. Like the other poster said, he is more "Sticking it" to him and trying to get back at him for comments made that really caused a raucous. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how Donaghy responds if at all.

Re: Stern has gone over the edge
I do not see how this is going to help the NBA. The NBA was so much better off letting the million go, now every time the screw with the guy he will add more to the charges, and honestly does anybody really think he does not have more to say. The other thing is that in most lawsuits when the party suing starts screwing with the amount of money they feel they need, often it is looked at as a bad thing for the group doing the suing, as it look more like a vindictive case other then actual damages caused by the sued party.
As for the idea of the NBA charging him for defamation does anybody think that the NBA can prove he lied which would be the only way to prove defamation? If they could do you not think it would have came out by now.

Re: Stern has gone over the edge
I wondered how on earth they spent that much but then I read that they paid one official 270 dollars an hour and another one for 100 dollars an hour during the course of the investigation. That's an outrageous sum and totally unjustified. They could have hired independant private investigators for much less.

Re: Stern has gone over the edge
This does seem like overkill. I don't know what the combined value of the NBA is, but $1.4 million seems like something the league makes in about in an hour. Donaghy is getting a nice jail cell so why draw even more attention to his actions over peanuts?

Re: Stern has gone over the edge
This is what is known as a "slap" lawsuit. It is designed to intimidate the accused. They are actually illegal in many states.Donaghy might very well be able to countersue for harassment and demand confidential memos about all the officials which he then could present at the trial. If Stern were half as smart as he believed himself to be he would pay off Donaghy to keep his mouth shut
