Allen's beef with "The Big Three" label

Post#1 » by Dirty Water » Mon Jun 23, 2008 12:51 pm

Ray Allen has said he's been trying to downplay the Big Three label all year. He has said guys like Pollard and Scal have contributed all year and that it should be the "Big 15." I agree with him in this regard. However, this is where my view differs with his mentality. If he ultimately doesn't like the way the Big 3 is put on a pedestal, then why play into that hype. Not one ESPN commercial, but TWO. IMO, he should have been a man and stuck by his words and ideals and convinced Pierce and KG to not participate in those commercials. I was actually surprised when I saw those commercials because I think that kind of stuff doesn't promote team unity, but a heirarchy within the team. The unity that they were trying to promote since the beginning of the season like in Rome in such etc.

I think players are contractually obligated to do things like ESPN spots. I doubt Ray actually has much control over them. I'm sure Ray could have really stuck to his ideals and refused but really, is it worth making that much of a fuss over?

I think he was just trying to make sure all his teammates were recognized. It was fine.

I think most of the Big Three stuff - magazine covers, commercials, etc. - were done well before the season even got started. I could be wrong, but it seems like they tried to stay clear of that stuff during the year (obviously, the media kept discussing it).

I thought during the playoffs that one of the big differences between the Celtics and the Lakers was that you could tell the other Celtics players were able to shoot with confidence and make plays without having to worry about what their teammates thought. Eddie House took some big shots in Games 3 and 4 - he missed a good look in Game 3 and he made the one in Game 4 to put the C's ahead. Posey obviously could freely shoot, and Rondo's teammates were constantly encouraging him to shoot and attack the basket when unguarded. Tony Allen came in the game and was aggressive and attacked the basket.

When someone else took a big shot for the Lakers, there was a good chance that Kobe was going to bitch at them. With about two minutes left in Game 4, Jordan Farmar was able to get a wide open three to tie the game and he missed, and you just know that he didn't have the same confidence that House or Posey did.

Ya Im pretty sure all the stuff was before the season also. And I agree I think our players new if they took good shots and missed them KG PP and Ray would not be blaming them however the LA players did look hesitant at times, I dont know if that was because of our D or because from what we heard they didnt want to be yelled at.
