Franchise Players: Players that have/will turn their franchise around and have become household names in the NBA:

Kobe Bryant
Lebron James
Chris Paul
Deron Williams
Kevin Garnett
Brandon Roy
Dwight Howard
Paul Pierce
Chris Bosh
Dirk Nowitzki
Amare Stoudemire

Players that would be on the list but have been plauged by injury plagued seasons, off court incidents or failure to show up in big games:

Yao Ming
Tracy McGrady
Baron Davis
Carlos Boozer
Dwayne Wade (Closest to being on list above had he followed up his 06 championship season better)
Jermaine O'neal
Carmello Anthony
Gilbert Arenas
Manu Ginobili (reckless style of play is starting to catch up with him)

Past their prime/former franchise players: All still solid players but I would be hesitant to build a franchise around any one of these players

Vince Carter
Shaquille O'neal
Tim Duncan
Steve Nash
Jason Kidd
Stephon Marbury
Chauncy Billups
Rasheed Wallace
Allen Iverson

To be determined/ young talent in the league that has the potentail to be that player but time will tell:

Kevin Durant
Greg Oden
Nick Young
Shaun Livingston
Andrew Bynum
Devin Harris
Monta Ellis
Andrie Iguadola
Jamal Crawford
Michael Beasely
Derrick Rose
Al Jefferson
Andrew Bogut
Raymond Felton

In my mind a franchise player is someone that can will your team to a championship.

These guys have done it:

Kobe
Garrentt
Duncan
Wade

and I think that Lebron, Paul, and Howard will be win a championship soon.

This is a good thread,

With all the players in the league that want/think they deserve a MAX contract its good to point out the TRUE franchise guys. IMO i think only FRANCHISE players DESERVE a max contract. Max there should be 30 franchise, thus 30 max contracts, but theres not there are even less franchise players yet so many more max contracts.

My list, prob more just cant think of any

Lebron James,
Dwane Wade
Kobe,
Duncan,
KG,
Chris Paul

R.Lewis,
Marion,
hahah just kidding, are these guys really MAX players?! damn money well wasted

Oh he has? Why isn't Nowitzki considered then? Kobe has what? 4 championships? All alongside SHAQ. In fact, Kobe has never won anything outside of Shaq, though Shaq has won outside of Kobe. You could argue that Shaq was the real reason that those championships were won. On the other hand, Dirk has had to lead teams with the following centers: Raef LaFrentz (PF/C), Erick Dampier (zero offense), DeSagana Diop (zero offense), Shawn Bradley, etc. Despite this, Dirk and Kobe's (post-Shaq) playoff numbers are comparable.

I am a "short list" kind of guy. Franchise players are players that you can build a championship contender around. They play both ends of the floor and they can take over a game. In today's NBA, there are only six...

Dwyane Wade
LeBron James
Kobe Bryant
Kevin Garnett
Tim Duncan
Dwight Howard

I have issues with putting Dirk on the list. Sometimes he is on when he's making it to the WCF every year, winning 67 games, or getting the MVP. Other times he's off for the Miami series and the letdown vs. Golden State. I don't think he should get flak for this year, because New Orleans was just a better team.

The player making the best bid to be on the list right now is Chris Paul, but I'm hesistant to give it to a guard before a dominant big man unless I actually see him at least lead his team to the Finals. Chris Paul was my MVP this year but I wanna see how the Hornets build on their success first.

Dwight makes the list despite his limited playoff success because he is the best center in the NBA, and he's never missed a game in his career. That is a franchise player, period. Next season he might be dropping MVP numbers, if they ever give him more than 12 shots.

LMAO at Roy, Bosh, and Amare on here over Dwyane Wade. He might make it if he followed up 2006 better? He was out for 30 games and he still made the playoffs, which Brandon Roy never has. How did Dirk follow up 2007? Will Bosh ever even make the Conference Finals in the East, where Wade would have also won in 2005 if not for injury? Call me when Amare even makes the Finals. Or Chris Paul, Deron Williams, or Dwight Howard for that matter.

Crawford has been in the league for 7 years. I just can't see how anyone would consider him a young player who needed time. He is 28 afterall.

There's always a 'but' for some people when talking about Paul. Last season you probably would've said 'I'd put him on this list 'but' first he needs to make the playoffs. Now it's 'but' lets see how his team build on their success or 'but' let's see him lead his team to the finals. So if the team builds on their success and reach the Finals but "lose", then I guess the next 'but' will be 'but' I'll put him on this list when he wins a Championship. Paul is a franchise player.

I've been drooling over Paul's moves since he put that shake'n'bake headfake on three Duke Bluedevils en route to an upset at Wake my freshman year of college. You don't need to preach to me about his ability. I made it a point not to miss a playoff game of his, and believe it or not I actually get more Hornets games than Heat games up at UF. Especially with Orlando so close by.

Like I said, no guard makes it on my franchise player list without making the Finals. Kobe, LeBron, Wade have made the Finals. Deron has gotten farther than Paul but they're not so different in terms of ability. I like Paul a little better, but not enough to put him on my franchise player list.

You had a good idea *but* you're not actually telling me anything. Vince Carter has carried a team as far in the playoffs as Paul, while being as spectacular with the high-flying antics early in his career. He's still one of the best players in the NBA. So does Chris Paul have franchise talent? Yes. But he is not a franchise player until I see how he can build on the success of his first playoff run.

I said he was on the cusp, I don't know what else you want. I'm keeping off a guy who actually won MVP, has had a 67-win campaign, and has gone to a handful of WCF. Clearly I have pretty strict standards. As I said I'm a "short list" guy.

Who's preaching? This is all just for fun so it's not like YOU or I really determine who's franchise players or not right? All that really matters is whether or not the team he works for thinks he's a franchise player and right now I'm willing to bet they do. But, these cute little lists are only for fun. Nothing wrong with opinions.

I think Kevin Garnett over the years proved that he is not a real franchise player and you can't build around him unless you have two other max players on the payroll.

Franchise players are players that can carry a team, create ticket sales, and a legit suerstar, and also the GM has made a commitment to keep that player for a while.

Kevin Garnett
Paul Pierce
Kobe Bryant
LeBron James
Dirk Nowitski
Yao Ming
Tracy McGrady
D-Wade
Chris Paul
Dwight Howard
Brandon Roy
Tim Duncan
Chris Bosh
Deron Williams

i have two big issues with this, and its not just you but basically everyone...KG is not a frachise player, kobe is 10x the franchise player he is. he has been on a succesfull team once in his career, this last season obviously, and im curious because to me it seems like since kg went to boston that everything he did, or should i say didnt do in minnesota was stricken from the record. atleast kobe has multiple titles with only one hall of famer on his team, kg needed 2 hall of famers and a horrid eastern conference to help pad there record.

the second issue is that u laugh at brandon roy for being on that list. im actually laughing at you    because u dont seem to think roy, paul, or williams will ever get to the finals let alone win it. howard i dont think will just cuz hes in orlando, but paul will multiple times and i think derron will once or twice, but roy will go to about 7 or 8 finals, coming away with about 5-6 rings and a couple finals mvps.
