Mem/Ind #5 pick

Post#1 » by granger05 » Wed Jun 25, 2008 3:29 pm

Indy gives, Memphis receives:
Jeff Foster
Shawne Williams
Memphis gives, Indy receives:
#5 pick
Brian Cardinal
maybe Crittenden

Why for Memphis:
Why does Memphis do anything? Their owner is trying to cut payroll and decimate his fanbase. The rumor is that the Knicks are offering David Lee, and Malik Rose's expiring for Cardinal and the #5. Isn't this a better deal than that? Foster is probably what everyone hopes David Lee will become long term though he isn't as young and his contract will be up. Shawne has Memphis ties and is still on his rookie deal.

Why for Indy:
Foster is probably our most valuable trade chip, and also a player I'd hate to see go (especially relegating him to a situation like Memphis). However, you have to know when to use your bullets and the #5 pick seems like the right target. Shawne is apparently trying Bird's patience anyway. It would be nice to get one of the Memphis PGs in this deal (Lowry or Crittenden), but if that was a sticking point I wouldn't think it holds the deal up for me. The problem is that I'm not really sure what I'd do with the #5 pick. It looks like Bayless is there in more and more mock drafts, certainly Gordon should be. Then we can go big with the #11 to fill the void left by Foster. I'd like to see if we could turn this into a bigger deal and involve another team and player to move up to 3 and get Mayo.

Not a chance Memphis does this. They won't take our garbage and give us their gold.

Add in the #11 from Indy to Memphis and you might be close. We might also be able to either take out Shawne or swap him out for the #41 2nd rounder.

This offer would offend me though if I were a Memphis fan. We can't just keep making up offers and rationalizing them with "well, they're Memphis...." like we used to do with Isiah and the Knicks.

I tend to agree with Scoot here. The only reason that this isn't so bad as to be lockable is that there is a documented rumor floating around that Memphis was pimping out their #5 pick to anyone willing to take back Brian Cardinal's contract.

If they actually did something like your proposal, then league might have to step in and handle the situation there, a la the Ted Stepien debacle in Cleveland back in the '80's.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

I agree with all of you that this is a horrible deal for Memphis. The only reason I proposed it is because I think that it's better than the rumor already floating around about a bad deal between Memphis and New York. This should be offensive to Memphis fans, but so should pretty much every rumor floating around as well (like Conley to move up 3 spots...thankfully shot down today).

I don't want to be one of those people that proposes deals like this as though they're respectable, but this was a direct reaction to the Knicks rumor.

Here's a link to Andy Katz's rumor's page on ESPN. Here's the NY/MEM blurb.

The Memphis-New York trade isn't dead yet. Memphis is still considering all options. But if the deal were to get done, then the Grizzlies would essentially be trading Love for New York's David Lee. Who do you think is more ready to contribute next season? Lee is an experienced pro. But it may become a question of who is better. If the Griz believe Lee is better, they may go with him. But that might not be a consensus within the league.

So it's fine to call my offer crazy, but don't act like Memphis is behaving as though they're sane. I agree with count that something needs to be done about teams that sell out their futures and fanbases like this to save a few bucks.

I first saw this rumor that the Grizz would give away the #5 pick to get rid of Cardinal in chad fords mock draft. I had the same reaction, I know we can do better than Rose and Lee. Daniels and Williams is a much better deal and we could add the #11.

If I were a Grizz fan I'd be irate at best if my team traded a top 5 pick just to cut 2 yrs of salary at $6.5 per. Maybe the knicks are sending a nice marbled rye and a couple of bottle of scotch so the memphis GM can get wasted. Or like someone said a giant concrete middle finger to put out front of the stadium thanking the fans for their support.
