RealGM fan mock draft: Magic on the clock!

Post#1 » by smoothie » Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:06 pm

using knowledge of recent reports from the team you follow most closely, please form an educated guess as to whom your team will select and why.

this is not about who you want your team to draft, but who you think they want to draft given the situation below.

after posting this thread in every board leading up to yours, i've got this Draft Board:

1. Chicago - Rose
2. Miami - Beasely
3. Minnesota - Mayo
4. Seattle - Bayless
5. Memphis - Love
6. New York - Westbrook
7. LA Clippers - Gordon
8. Milwaukee - B.Lopez
9. Charlotte - Randolph
10. New Jersey - Gallinari
11. Indiana - Augustin
12. Sacramento - Arthur
13. Portland - Alexander
14. Golden State - Rush
15. Phoenix - R.Lopez
16. Philadelphia - Jordan
17. Toronto - Hibbert
18. Washington - Greene
19. Cleveland - Koufos
20. Denver - Chalmers
21. New Jersey - Speights
22. Orlando - ??

i'm very interested to read your responses! you're on the clock!

don't forget to provide a reason why you think your teams management will draft player x given the situation above. please don't just post a name of a player, those are usually ignored for a more intelligent / in depth reply.
sometimes the majority are just a collection of fools.

Courtney Lee. Rumours/reports suggest that the Magic management are quite enamoured with him, and that Otis Smith has brought him in for workouts, as well as travelling to see him workout elsewhere. Add to that, he fits the need of a shooting guard who is fairly athletic, a good defender, and can put the ball in the hoop. He's seen as NBA ready, a guy who can contribute right away, which is important for a team whose weakest position last year was the 2, and who stands to lose their starting SG (using the term loosely, with all due respect to Mo Evans) this summer as well.

wonderful reply. very insightful.

though they are "enamored" with Lee... where do big guys like McGee, Hickson, and Thompson stand in comparison to Lee?

I don't understand threads like this .... how do you determine what the pick is?

Do you just pick the one you think is representative, based on what? Insightful comments? Number of votes?

Do you then take that allow that to represent the choice of this board to other boards?

pretty much.

i don't really count votes, which is why i didn't make this poll. i don't like the idea of people just voting and not telling me the reason why they feel the way they do. that's the same reason why i tent to ignore replies that only leave the name of the player and nothing else.

the reason is... i ask for insight, reports, quotes from the gm, anything that gives you guys a clue as to what type of player the team would like to draft. the problem is a get mostly "i'd take so and so."

so i read my way through mostly opinionated replies, or what i call voting replies (just the players name) and i look for insightful, informative replies. then i would try to find a common name through those type of replies.

and in the end... who cares? it's just another mock draft that's probably going to be way off the real thing.

I've not heard much about Hickson or McGee, but I read somewhere that Thompson had been brought in a couple of times for workouts. They also brought in a lot of guys like Joey Dorsey, DJ White and Richard Hendrix (if the articles I read are correct) which suggests that they are leaning more towards acquiring a second rounder and picking up a big there. I think Hendrix did pretty well, and I know he got a lot of praise at the pre-draft camp. Wouldn't be surprised yo see Orlando make a play for him. Seems like he might be the undersized post player who is allowed to slip and ends up being a bit of a gem in the second - seems to be more of those with each passing draft.

I've seen McGee play.

Has potential to be a role player, but that'd be down the road.

Athletic, but that's about it.

Does a lot of things, but none of them consistently.

tough call here but i think we should go for CDR. has good length but needs to bulk up a bit. slightly better 3 pt. shooter than lee and shoots better from the field. lee seems to be the better defender with a more nba ready body but i see CDR with a lot more potential on both ends of the floor.

chris douglas-roberts, and the reason being is that we are in dire need of shooting guard who will come in and contribute right away. this guy can come in and make an immediate impact on this team and he has range when he walks into the gym. i personally think he is our guy, big, athletic 2 guard with range and can contribute right away. NBA ready.
I live rent free in your head. You know who you are :D

Not changing this sig until Magic win a championship. Started 6/26/2015.

Most mock sites have the Magic selecting CDR. The O-Sen (the local paper) basically has announced that CDR will be tabbed. He looks to be a good replacement to Bogans and Evans. And he will fit in to the ten-man rotation as the Magic will need bench help at the #2.

actually most sites have the Magic taking Courtney Lee...

5 of the 6 sites I check on a regular basis have of picking up Lee, NBADraft.net has us taking Donte Green...obviously because of some mental retardation...

on the front page of RealGM their draft day editon mock has us taking CDR.

here is a quote from the person who did this mock:

I keep hearing from everywhere and everyone I turn that Lee is definitely their guy at 22, but I don't believe he is a starting wing in the NBA and doesn't shoot well enough as a spot-up shooter for Orlando. Douglas-Roberts is a superior fit and I think there is some smoke-screening going on.

no offense to Chris or my RGM brothers, but RGM is NOT one of those 6 sites I peek in on daily for my draft info...I understand his opinion and view, I love CDR, If you remember 2 months ago I kicked off my CDR campaign...but at this point I believe that Lee, under the tutelage of SVG is the right guy, he's ready to give us much needed offense at the 2 and defense...
