Best fast break scorer ever

Post#1 » by ronnymac2 » Thu Jun 26, 2008 1:38 pm

Who's the most dangerous scorer ever on the fast break?

Clyde Drexler comes to mind for me.

Karl Malone comes to mind, but you have to talk about Jordan, Alex English, etc.

Barkley, if only because nobody ever, ever, ever got in his way when he was thundering to the hoop.

I reentered the thread to add Barkley for this same reason.

I initially picked LeBron because he has the Charles-like quality where he barrels down the court liek a freight train. Ever seen someone take a charge on LeBron on a fast break?

^Pierce- in the playoffs, took a charge on the break on Lebron I think.

But yeah, I agree with the Lebron pick.

Pierce is terrific; he and LBJ are great on the break. Jordan and Dr. J historically. It's harder to tell today...teams don't run as much as they did in the 80s, although the trend seems to be moving toward more fast break play again. I'm glad.

But driving to the hoop is only one part of fast break scoring. Overall, I'd have to go with Jerry West. Went to the basket like an animal--somebody pointed out recently that West is the only true perimeter player in the top 10 of all time FTA/minute. Had a deadly pull-up jumper in case you did get back. And, just to burn you more, he was an elite three point shooter and was always frosty out there. You can't get a better combo than that, IMO.

My personal favorite esthetically will always be Dr. J. But, LeBron is almost impossible when he gets the ball on the move.

Jordan. Could take the pull-up 13-17 footer, could handle and weave around multiple defenders, could finish either over the top or while absorbing contact and contorting himself for some wild lay-in. Probably completed more 1-on-2 and 1-on-3 fastbreaks than anyone else.

Honorable mentions: Dr. J, Iverson, Drexler, Lebron, Kobe.

Yup, so many times it even looked like he would be stopped and he would break out some crazy circus layup.

Karl Malone was great at running the break with someone else because he had great hands, picked up nearly any pass your threw to him, and always finished strong, he was also great at finishing after contact.

Among players today that haven't been mentioned, Monta has to stand out. He's just so quick and acrobatic, and once he hit a game-winner on the break. BD's also very dangerous on the break.

Clyde, MJ, Barkley

LBJ, AI

I'm surprised Tony Parker's name hasnt come up..he's damn near impossible to stay in front of when he shifts gears
