Don't stop now, buy another 1st Bird...

Post#1 » by IndieRuso420 » Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:08 am

We just got to take JO off the books a little, so step your game up Simon Bro. & Bird/Morway. Buy someone's pick in the late twenties, don't get cheap now. This would just add more excitement to what is already an exciting Pacers draft. Three 1st round picks to go along with a starting PG (Ford), a serviceable C (Rasho), and I am hoping for 23 year old big man Kris Humphries (player to be named). That would be nice.

I think it's ultimately got to be Baston instead of Humphries there as the player to be named later. Humphries just signed a 3 year guaranteed extension that kicks in next year and is rumored to be $2.5-4 million a year. That's a lot of money for a guy that would be about the 3rd or 4th PF on the roster.

What about the idea of buying another 1st? I think that would be great.

Oh, I always am in support of buying up 1st rounders that people are selling for $3 million, and am pretty much in support of dealing Diogu for a 1st as well.

However, it's up to the Pacers if they want to shell out $3 million in cash just to have the right to pay another person $1 million next year in cash as well. That's a lot of cash that the Pacers might just not be pulling in.

It'll be interesting to see the amount of season tickets sold prior to the season. I'm really curious to whether or not there is a increase or decrease and the level of significance in the change. if the FO anticipates an increase in season tickets and general attendance, buying a late first rounder is completely realistic

I think Bird is doing a great job in terms of rallying the community, trying to hold draft parties, and making the guys they work out accessible. He is also showing he is willing to make a move. If he can get rid of Tinsley that will go a long ways towards getting fans back IMO. But in terms of buying a first rounder, I think you have to have a guy in mind that you are very sure will be there to do that. I think the three we have now are plenty.

I would think that if we got the opportunity to buy a pick we'd do it. Right now they have Roy Hibbert projected #30 in the RealGM mock. If we could get a late first rounder, how awesome would it be to get Augustin #11 (I'm not sold on him but he's probably who we'll take), Arthur #17, and Hibbert later in the first round? I would think they'd sell a lot more season tickets just based on their apparent commitment to fielding a decent team if they made this move, although I think trading for Ford and the pick and committing to dropping Tinsley has already made that impression to some extent.

Oh for sure season ticket sales increase. Fans were tired of the same team and players who were going nowhere. If for no other reason, the novelty of seeing new players will sell more tickets. Plus, I think with a legit point guard, the continued emergence of Granger and Dunleavy, plus two first round picks and some of the cancers removed...well, that will get people interested again.

They still got to get rid of Jamaal Tinsley. He's still a huge black-eye for the team and the city. No doubt that by just letting him go in a buyout or trade, it will increase season tickets. On top of that, the draft, Ford deal and what ever else they do. We may actually get fans at some games again!

I'm not sure if anyone can confirm this, but I was told this morning that IND sent the #41 pick to TOR in the JO trade.

Buying a late 1st might be real nice since we traded that 2nd round pick. What do you guys think?

Did we trade #41 to Toronto?

Post#11 » by mizzoupacers » Thu Jun 26, 2008 2:41 pm

ESPN says that we did.

And the "player to be named" is Maceo Baston, which is pretty much who it had to be given the salary parameters.

I don't much like losing the #41, since if anything I think Toronto owed US a little extra something. But then, I'm pretty sure that the guys I liked at that pick, Kyle Weaver or George Hill, will not be available that late anyway.

Maybe there is still a way the Pacers can come up with a third pick, early in the second round or late in the first? I've really warmed to the idea of getting Hill, I'm not so sure he won't turn out to be a better NBA player than, for example, Mario Chalmers. Chalmers is never going to be an NBA starter IMO, although he could be a nice backup. Hill just might end up being starting-caliber.

I may be wrong, but Bird isn't the one buying it, it would be the Simon brothers.

I would obviously like it a lot, but it just doesn't make sense for the Simons. They would essentially have to pay 3 million for another pick when we already have 2 rookies for fans to watch. Don't get me wrong, I would be thrilled, but realistically speaking, I'd say theres about a 2% chance of it actually happening.

I disagree, since we just took a whole year off paying JO salary. No reason to be cheap now. I'm not saying I think its 51% chance of happening. Obviously, I think the chances are slim. However, I don't see money as a reason not to do it, because as I said we just took a year off of JO's deal.

I have a feeling if it was your money you would think differently. I hope I'm wrong though, I would love a 3rd pick. I wouldn't be surprised if we trade either Diogu, Williams, or even Foster for another 1st. I just don't see us buying one.

On a side not, is anyone else bummed we included the #41 in this? I was excited for that pick.

I'de rather them buy a pick than trade any of our players.

As for #41, yeah I wanted DJ White. Oh well.

Well I think everyone would rather buy one, I'm just saying realistically we'd be much more likely to trade for one than buy one.

I think there's no way the Pacers could get a first-round pick for Diogu, and Williams is questionable too given his off-the-court embarrassing incidents.

I could definitely see someone coughing up a late first-rounder for Foster though. I don't think that's a very good idea--I think Foster is probably a lot better than anyone we could get with the pick, plus he's one of the team leaders/actual adults. Then again...we might only have Fiesty for one more season anyway, so maybe you just say "what the hell" and hope to get lucky with another dose of youth movement.
