Article: Draft Will Help Magic With Tax

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:53 pm

Here is a little something I whipped up for the Draft.

It's my preview and how the picks can help in regards to the luxury tax.

Enjoy!

i love how Howard doesn't post comments, he posts articles.

you should have a permanent sticky called "Weapons of Mass Discussion" or something...

anyway, the article, was cool. most of it was a re-hash of stuff i've read on the boards (that's not a criticism, just a point that i've made myself sick reading so intensely lately). the point i liked most was about the luxury tax. i actually wish you'd explored that a bit more. it's the kind of topic that'll bring a lot of Otis haters out of the woodworks if he looks to add talent without having to spend too much.

i can only imagine the aftermath if Otis doesn't use the MLE....

also, i completely agree that this draft is overrated. i can see nearly every forward from 13-30 being a role player at best and most will be Steven Hunter quality. there'll be a few gems, but someone like Dorsey or White, who will come in and give an immediate performance from day one but don't have the "upside" and are being over looked and going cheap in the 2nd rd. good news for us.

This should help shed some light on all the Otis apologists on the board who think he is doing a great job.

While he did add a good player in Rashard Lewis, he is vastly overpaid and could have longevity issues if the team continues to play him at the PF spot because Turk did so well. Add in the fact that his contract, along with Dwight's and Hedo's extension, will push the team dangerously close to the luxury tax for the next few years and the fans have to hope that FA will take a big discount to play for the team.

Good read and pretty much +1 on all of what Bensational said!

In Otis we trust for good or bad...

I'm a little nervous and excited. I can't wait for it to start!

Mass mentions this as a role-player draft. I agree, but I think the roles will of an above-average quality. If the Magic can get a 7th stringer at #22, then this was a great draft!

Let's just say I expect Orlando to get another pick and not out of the question they go for another first.

Regardless, I'd be shocked if they did not at least get a 2nd.

This is a draft where its so deep in terms of similar talent levels that nearly any combination of players going before us, even if ALL our targets go, leaves us with a more than good pick for our #22.

The only thing that can go wrong is drafting 2nd round talent with the pick ... and I cant see that happening.

Well, I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't find a way to at least get a second-round pick. When CDR was still there so late, I thought maybe they would lock up their guard problem for a while. I got disappointed earlier when Jason Thompson went so early, too, but nothing the Magic could do about that.

Still, don't see how they could not have picked up another pick. Seattle and Portland had so many picks that I think they have enough players for two rosters now.
