Draft Grade

Post#1 » by The Guilty Party » Fri Jun 27, 2008 4:18 am

This is a really complicated system here.... what grade would you give Ed Stefanski for his first draft as Sixers GM. Draft grades really don't mean much since we really don't know how Speights will pan out but were your expectations met??

Obviously I wanted Arthur but that was before this weird "kidney" story came out. Speights was my #2 and as the night went on, I really warmed up to the pick so I give the draft a B. If ES could have gotten us a 2nd round pick to grab Chalmers or Jordan he would have gotten an A.

I gave them a B for the simple fact that they didn't acquire another pick. With so much talent available in the later rounds and other teams basically just buying picks, I was a little disappointed we didn't do the same. With that being said I thought our only pick was a solid one. If Speights develops into a Al Jefferson or even Jason Maxiell type of player I will be very pleased.

B+

Made the right pick at the right spot. You only get A or better if you do something better than expected.

I said C. Personally I thought we had the assets to either move up and get someone like Bayless (guess they are not as high on him as I am). I also think we could have acquired a late 1st/early 2nd and got one of the trio of Chalmers (my first choice), Jordan or Greene. I know there is no guarantee with them, but the fact that 2 of them went in the 2nd rd, the risk is extreemly low. I saw that as a bit of a failure, but all in all I was happy with the pick and I understand the fact that the team is already very young and you can't add too many more young players.

I give it a B. I really think if Speights puts it together he can be a very effective PF in this league.

What happened to your boy Arthur, TGP?

Something weird went on with Arthur and I'd love to hear the story. Either way, Speights was my #2 and as the night went on and questions came out about Arthur's kidneys, well... I hoped on the SpeightTrain.

C

I'm not sold on Speights I don't like a lot of the downside on him. I would have much rather taken JJ Hickson at that spot if they wanted a banger down low and didn't want to touch Arthur. I'm really disappointed that they were not able to land Chalmers. They could have offered Utah's pick and gotten the PG to groom for next following next year. Now we will have no one at the PG position post Andre Miller which is not good at all. We are supposed to sit around and wait for July 1st and it seems like we will be opening up our gift and finding a lard piece of coal in it. No Brand No Smith not good at all. Making the playoffs cost this team not having a star player to attract other star players hurts this team. You have the Heat getting the PG we could have had and might get Brand the PF we want. They got Beasley and Wade sigh it's hard to stay positive about our team. : /

I for one wanted us to trade up for Bayless, he seems like a very good scorer, and he is a combo guard, so he could have helped out at point. I was actually quite disappointed that we didn't get him, however, Speights seems like a solid pick. I also understand why we didn't buy a late round pick, especially if we didn't have much confidenence in them...more money to spend come July 1st, since we won't be locked into another 1st round contract.

I have to give it a B-, it was a solid, safe pick. Nothing that made me say "wow great move" nothing that made me say "What the **** are they doing" could of moved up to a B+/A- if we got our hands on a late first/early second.

I voted B since Ed did the obvious & drafted a player with potential who fills a need. I also think this takes the pressure off of going after Zach Randolph so maybe I should have given a higher grade. The team could have gotten any number of 2nd rounders & that would have made me grade the draft higher.

Same as well. I give them a B+. I think the pick at 16 was perfect, but I really would have liked a late first/early second. If you could have added Greene, Arthur or Jordan for peanuts, that's a risk worth taking.

Now that all the trades have stopped and we know where people landed, here are some of my gut takes:

Best Drafts - Miami, Memphis, & New Jersey... I also like what Boston did with very little...

Worst Drafts - Minnesota, Sacremento, Washington, and Cleveland

I gave the sixers a solid "B" - They did as best as could be expected with what they had...

I think this draft answered at least another question....They are going to see if Lou Will can be the PG of the future for this team. They absolutuely could have gotten a PG if wanted. I think it is the right move. Lou Will has about 1/2 season to show he can be a capable PG and the Sixers can do this with little risk for they have AM. "IF" Lou Will is the PG that opens up so much that they can do with AM and Booth's expiring. They have almost $12M in expirings to play with. I for one am pulling for LWill for it is the best scenario for the Sixers. We'll see!

B

Speights was the best player we could take at 16. He can help our team.

I'm not happy about the Jazz taking Tomic with our second round pick, that guy could become a real stud in a couple of years.

Eventually, I'm not happy about the Korver-deal. We need 3-point shooting badly now and will have to spent other cash on that part.

I voted B+ , but we could have gotten another pick, especially since we do not have a 2nd round pick next year. They should bring Gary Forbes , Jamont Gordon to summer camp along with Charles Rhodes. Shan Foster lasted all the way till 51 when the Mavs selected him.

I'll go A-. It would have been an A+ had they gotten Jordan at pick 36. Although, if they would have given up three future seconds, I would not have been thrilled about that.

Meh..A- for being smart enough to not give up a lot in any trades.
