What to do with Mike Miller?

Post#1 » by Effigy » Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:43 am

He can't stay, right? I mean he plays the same position as Brewer. He also makes a lot of money compared to the rest of the team. WOuld it just take an expiring contract and a draft pick? What do you think will happen with Miller?

If I recall, we have 24 hours to trade him, and we can't combine him with another player in the trade. Otherwise, he's locked onto our team for three months. Is that correct?

I actually do like Mike Miller. I just don't like the deal that much... Brewer starting SG for defense and b/c of his size. Miller is a good shooter, distributor and rebounder at the 3. McCants 6th man. That rotation does work at the 2/3 IMO. Gomes gets some minutes at the 3 and 4, behind Love. All in all it does make sense teamwise, but it would have been great to get another potential star on the team.

Foye
Brewer/McCants
Miller/Gomes
Love/Gomes
Jefferson

Not a bad foundation but still... Mayo... :-?

Apparently you can trade him alone whenever you want.

Larry Coons CBA FAQ.

In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

For two months after receiving the player in trade or claiming him off waivers, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap.

He could stay. He and Corey can both play 2/3, and they're good offense/defense combo to boot. He just turned 28, it's not like he's 32. While I wouldn't be surprised if he's moved, I think the smart money is on keeping him.

I think Miller is undervalued here. If McHale truly wanted Love, getting Miller as well is a great move. The more I think of it, the more I do like this. Love and Jefferson should be real good together. Don't forget KG didn't have any help down low in his time with the Wolves and just look how much he appreciates Perkins now (and he isn't that big a talent either).
But as for Miller, the guy is a great shooter (45% FG and 40% 3FG over his career). Averaged 18,5 ppg last season and got over 5 rpg and 4 apg. That's real value right there. Plus him and Brewer seem like a good match as well.
In the end this deal really helps the team. I'm shocked we didn't keep Mayo. I'm really afraid Mayo (and the Grizzlies) will make the Wolves look like fools. But looking at the concept of a team, I think the Wolves did good with this trade.

Miller is a stud. He can play SF all right and actually compliments Brewer VERY well.

You guys should be happy to be getting Miller. McHale has officially screwed you guys out of a draft. I thought the Mayo pick was great, now only to have Curry/Randolph II with Jefferson/Love expect they're even shorter....

Congrats on Brian Cardinal too. What the hell is going on in Minnesota???

OK, trying to mellow a moment and "salvage" this from the MN side. Miller to be dealt, maybe they have a second trade lined-up. Miller for an exp and a center prospect we like from this year or another player we liked but went late lotto to the teens. Where is Miller a fit? Portland (hate adding the their AMAZING talent pool, so pained to be so jealous), Toronto by the poster here, Lakers?, Phx?, Houston?, I am just not sure where he fits. NJN? I need a Shrink!

I agree on Miller being a stud. I'm just not sold on the trading Mayo and getting Love part. Miller + Love > Mayo? I'm not sure. I just haven't seen and read enough about Love to be certain about this.

Problem is defense. KG and Perkins are both better defenders than either Al or Love right now. Maybe Love will surprise us with his man defense. Against bigger players like Dirk and Bosh, who just shredded Gomes last year, it's probably an upgrade. And Love will help with defensive rebounding. But Wolves are still going to have trouble keeping quick guards out of the paint. Still have trouble with the bigger C's in this league.

Miller is a good rebounder, too. Foye/Miller/Brewer/Love/Jefferson is an excellent rebounding lineup.

Love is an exellent team defender and team D > man D.
Now if only this team had somebody like Tibodough or Casey.

The defense has me worried as well. But like you said, rebounding will be taken care of. But with Mayo on the team, our interior defense would have been even worse (since Al would still be by himself).

This year. But then they pick up a big next year who's a better defender than Love. Now, we've got Love/Al for the next 4 years, so they've got to make it work.

Im going to need a week to let this sink in.

This is just a shock right now. I've waited 36 days to be happy mayo was a wolf then we trade him in a few hours.
