After reading Otis' post, I am forced to agree with him.
The first round trade is prety decent and could turn out to be great. As long as Mayo doesn't turn into the next big thing.
The second round is where I am dissappointed, turning a high second in a deep draft into two seconds in a forecasted weaker draft does very little to help the team. There were good players available at those spots that could have developed into good players and a few who could have contributed next year! CDR and Chalmers could have helped next year and I agree that rolling the dice on Jordan and Hardin would have been a better move than going for a Euro that won't be around for several years. We could have stashed one of them in the D league and used the other as short minute center help. I will be very pissed if Jordan puts a chip on his shoulder and applies himself into being an effective big man.
Now we just have two more players to draft next year that probably won't be able to make the team.

Re: How do you rate the second round?
The problem is what the economics of bringing over Europeans has become. With the spread of basketball in Europe and the ass kicking the Euro is giving the Dollar, suddenly European players can stay at home and make more money. If Montenegro guy comes over, sure it's a good pick. But that's becoming a bigger and bigger if, and even 5 years ago that was a big if. Just ask Orlando Magic fans.

I also lack confidence in our European scouting, it's not like we have a great record in that department.

F-
Chalmers and CDR were steals at 34. There is no reason to trade away Chalmers for 2 useless future picks. Probably the best defensive PG in the draft I though he'd get picked up in the teens. But to get him at 34 is a real bargain....Im just so urgh by it....
Instead of getting picks we shoulda just made mia drop the protection on that future pick, or just taken jordan instead.
grrrr

That's very much up in the air...mostly depends on if Pekovic comes over eventually. Also, if we get Gary Forbes, I'll count that as a good 2nd round pick even though he's an undrafted FA
Thriving on mediocrity since '89.

I would agree with your point about our scouting, BUT it was universally accepted that Pekovic would be the 31st pick. He likely would have been a 12-16 range pick if not for the contract situation. Check some film and some comments on him, he is a legit talent with a mean chip (janitor off Scrubs but can dunk)

I agree, the trade puzzled me, but even before the draft it seemed pretty apparent that we werent going to keep both seconds.
I don't mind the Pek pick. Someone posted a John Hollinger article about project PER, which of course is not the greatest measure, but I believe his top three prospects were Beasley, Love, Pekovic, in that order. Getting two of the top three prospects isnt a bad draft.

I like the Pekovic pick but as I was watching the wolves press conference just now I heard Mchale said that with the 34th pick they thought all the bigs were off the board and they were going to trade the pick BEFORE we traded Mayo away. That just irks me really. What about Jordan and Hardin??? Come on Mchale think a little.
I'd give our second round a D.

First round: 8 good trade but I get this feeling that Mayo will be an All star
Second:2 because we skipped on some bigs and I thinking Pekovic may become greedy and stay in Europe after all his earning.

Re: How do you rate the second round?
My problem is the fact that we wont see Pekovic for another 2+ years. Sure, now he says he eventually wants to come to the NBA, but things change over that much time. We had the #34 with DeAndre Jordan, Devon Hardin and a couple other big men on the board and did nothing about it. 2 days before the draft there was a thread were the consensus was that if Jordan fell past 20-21 we should REALLY consider trading up for him, well he fell all the way to #35 before going and I think we should have taken a chance. The 2 future 2nd's upset me because there isnt gonna be a draft this deep in the near future and the chance that those picks are both in the top 5-10 of the 2nd round is very unlikely.
If we knew we were gonna go after Love, we should have made a better attempt and picking up a big man. Im gonna be kicking myself in the head when Jordan is in the Summer League dunking on every thing within 50 feet.
As far as grading goes, im giving us an 'INC.' incomplete. We dont know what Pek is gonna do and apparently we didnt even make the Chalmers pick, it was already traded by the time #34 was on the board. When compared to what I wanted us to do, I'll give it a D for Dammit to hell.

Re: How do you rate the second round?
I've come around on the Pekovic pick since McHale seems to believe he's willing to come over. If he comes over, stashing him should prove to be a good move.
I liked the Chalmers pick. It didn't make as much sense with Mayo in fold, but it was good value. We got a lot to trade him away ($2 million and 2 2nd rounders), which made sense when Mayo was here. However, after trading Mayo away for Love, Chalmers made more sense, and would have given us a draft all the stat gurus would be fawning over.

"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''
