Abe needs to sell the team
It is time for Abe to sell the team to Ted Leonsis. You can't win by being cheap anymore this is not the 1970's anymore you need to spend money to get talent. If he really cares about this team he should tell Ted he's ready to sell Ernie isn't the problem Abe is he has been for years. the only good move he has made in the last few years was firing MJ and that could have been done better.

Relax....I don't think Abe will own the team for too much longer.

Been waiting for this since the Webber trade. I respect Pollin but I definitely don't like him.

The potential of Ted Leonsis + Ernie Grunfeld is way too much. Ted lets George McPhee do whatever he wants to make a winner and McPhee stinks at everything besides making trades. Could you imagine what Ernie and Ted can do?? Sick....

I think Abe is going to trade the team to Boston for cash.

Re: Abe needs to sell the team
Abe hasn't been cheap since he ponied up big bucks for Webber, Howard, Strickland, Richmond. Then ponied up even bigger bucks to get rid of some of those guys. When MJ first got to the team, Abe spent more than $60 million in dead salary to release or buyout guys the team no longer wanted. Now, you're welcome to argue that the team never should have gotten into some of those contracts, but that's not a symptom of cheapness.
Selling the 2nd round pick wasn't about being cheap, it was about there not being anyone on the board that the team wanted to have on the roster next season.

Nice...Gotta love the Stern references. Any chance you head Eric the Midget flip out yesterday? It was probably one of the funniest things I've ever heard...
"ZERO...POINT...ZERO..."
To the point at hand, I have a family friend that works in ticketing at the Phone Booth and is a close friend of Abe Pollins and he says that Abe isn't going to be around much longer. He's in very bad shape.

Re: Abe needs to sell the team
This has probably been asked about a 1000000 times, but is it DEFINITE that Leonsis is taking over the Wizards after Pollin is gone?
and who does the Verizon Center lease go to? I know its under Abe right now. Does it stay in the family. Because the Caps have been playing on terrible quality ice and Abe has done nothing to improve it for years.

It's basically guaranteed that Leonsis will get the team. Pollin owns 51% of the Wiz and the Verizon Center while Leonsis owns 44%. When Pollin decides to sell Leonsis will buy him out.
PS:You asked does the Verizon Center stay in the Pollin family. And the answer to that is no. Pollin's children don't want the team or Verizon.

Okay he's not been cheap but the money wasn't spent wisely that is bad managment and he took too long to get a real GM Ernie hasn't made the greatest picks but he's 1000 times better then Wes ever was.

Re: Abe needs to sell the team
Kev, they can twist it anyway they like but selling the pick when talent is available is a cheap way of handling the pick. I don't care how many young players they have on the team because the Wizards still have not addressed there rebounding problems. They are below average and it makes their already inconsistent defense worse. We'll see, but I just don't see a problem with bringing in the pick and seeing if your scouting is up to par.

Who were they going to get in the 2nd round that was going to address their rebounding/defense issues? Remember, this 2nd rounder would have to rebound/defend well enough that it would make sense for the team to play this guy in place of people the Wiz already have on the roster -- Jamison, Haywood, Butler, Blatche. Not to mention Etan Thomas (who should be back next season), and McGee. And Pecherov. And McGuire.
Maybe the team's selling of the pick is a sign that their scouting is up to par. Maybe they looked over the array of players and didn't see anyone who'd be able to help them more than the guys they already have.

Re: Abe needs to sell the team
But that is the problem for me. It seems like players like Hardin or Hendrix were looked over for either experience or monetary questions. We know the Wizards are veteran playoff team but at some point the FO has to address the obvious weaknesses. Etan may help but the draft always has somebody who can be an effective trash man in 2nd rd. We'll see what the FO does this summer and I'll definitely watch players available after 47 just for the chance that I can be pissed off by their success.

That's their way of saying, "Our scouts and I are morons. We think there's not a soul left in the draft that's better than any of the players that make up this painfully mediocre and injury prone side. So we'd rather fill Pollin's pockets w/cash than actually use our brains to acquire a sleeper,or use some foresight and unload the pick for a future 2nd rounder when our roster is less loaded w/mediocrity and more full of the sorts of scrubs likely to get beaten out by one of our typically bad 2nd round choices like that Veremenko kid we're going to ignore in the summer league next month."
Oh and as for GMGM, really weird cat. His drafts in '98, '99, '00 and '01 were unbelievably bad if memory serves, just freaking ghastly. Hard to believe he wasn't fired as the drafts were responsible for the collapse of the team as well as the Jagr signing. However, his drafts in '02, '04, '06, and '07 were all pretty good, and this year might be good too (sounds like we pulled 3-4 potential future Caps out of it). I don't know if they cleaned out the crappy scouts like Gibbs did after taking over, or not, but I do know that GMGM's drafts have been signifigantly better since '02 (although '03 was a disaster, w/only Fehr as our last hope and he was taken before two all stars that were actually on the board and according to the mediots of the time, the best talent available when we picked. Fehr was ridiculous in juniors, as well as the AHL, then his back was ruined 18 months ago and he only fully recovered a few months back, so whether he's a bust or not, or can live up to the stats that suggested he was every bit as good as Getzlaf remains to be seen).
