I would not count on that space being available. Either way you slice it IMO it's better to take the more conservative (thus, having less money available) approach.
EDIT:
I think that bit regarding Garbo applies to NBA teams only.
no it doesn't. It means that the Raptors have the right to match any offer he receives.

Re: 2008/2009 Raptors Cap, Salaries, Tax Breakdown
of course since we are trying to win it all with the JO move mlse could spend some of their leafs money on the raptors to put us over the top. Once you think that it is ok to go over the cap then anyone comes into play on free agency do they not? And since $35 million comes off in 2 years you are not stuck over the cap permanently like the nicks.
The raptors can never win a championship because the refs wont let us...…... Unless a miracle trade happens.

Could it be that MLSE is willing to pay the lux tax!
yeah, another trade is brewing. Just a hunch. But do we have the assets to get it done?

This was a team that couldnt get past the first round.
Do you expect this team to make a 100 degrees turn around in one off season?

Sucks that we are so tight on cash now. Any chance of Calderon signing at a discount to "help the team"? 6mil per maybe?

Released/waived players with guaranteed contracts continue to be included in their former team's payroll. Players whose contracts are not guaranteed are included in team salary in the amount they made while they were with the team. Players on non-guaranteed "summer contracts" are not included in team salary unless they make the regular season roster.
1) If another team signs a released player who had a guaranteed contract (as long as the player has cleared waivers), the player's original team is allowed to reduce the amount of money they still owe the player (and lower their team payroll) by the right of set-off. Note that this is true if the player signs with any professional team — it does not even have to be an NBA team. The amount the original team gets to set off is limited to one-half the difference between the player's new salary and the minimum salary for a one-year veteran (if the player is a rookie, then the rookie minimum is used instead)."
2) If however, the Raptors were given a one-time opportunity to waive Garbajosa, and he was bought out, than it will not count towards luxury tax.
It can't be option 2. We used our one-time election on Zo.
As for option 1, the cap hit still depends on the original buyout amount. If, for example, the buyout reduced his salary from $4.25 million to $2.75 million (a $1.5 million reduction), the setoff from his new $3 million contract with Malaga would be in the vicinity of $1.1 million ($3 million minus $770,000 divided by 2.) That would leave a cap hit of about $1.65 million. So the key in estimating his net cap affect would be the original buyout, which could vary considerably.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jose signed a deal like this:
08/09 $6,000,000
09/10 $7,000,000
10/11 $8,500,000
11/12 $10,000,000
08/09 $6,000,000
09/10 $7,000,000
10/11 $8,500,000
11/12 $10,000,000

Yes, you're correct.
That said, the same is true of Jose. Plus given what Delfino did for us (as bashed as he is) in backing up Jose, I think he will be back. The team could negotiate him lower independant of the qualifying offer. I'd mistakenly thought that the March 1 deadline was July 1 (meaning if Delfino accepted we'd be locked into it).

Who would have thought picking up Joey G's 2nd team option would carry so much significance?

Perhaps MLSE is willing to pay the tax for a year or 2 while the Leafs stink up the joint to take some of the pressure off of them. It would give the hockey fans hope and we'd be the recipeints of this perception they are creating. Although highly improbable, it could be a bigger Big business decision than you think

Re: 2008/2009 Raptors Cap, Salaries, Tax Breakdown
I posted this in the other thread but:
I seem to recall Grunwald saying something about being able to go over the luxury cap b/c the money collected from teams over the cap (i.e. NY, Dallas) is shared equally among the teams. I realize that it may not be much, but perhaps 2 or 3 million from the shared money would give us another 3 million to spend over the cap b/c that dollar for dollar penalty is paid from the shared money?

But is it not shared amongst only those teams who remained under the luxury tax?

Also, someone mentioned that maybe we could get Jose to sign for less, like 6 million per...I think that's ridiculous! Jose deserves to get paid. Personally I think he will make at least 9 million this year and frankly that's a bargain price especially when you compare it to a salary like JO's. In essence whoever proposed that Jose should take less money is basically suggesting that b/c we now have JO who is taking up so much salary, Jose should be affected and get less...doesn't make sense. If anything, JO should restructure that massive contract if he really wants to win as badly as he claims.

Maybe BC can back-end load Jose's contract?

Thats what I expect, especially with JO's fat contract coming off the books in 2 years.
