Magic give Auggie tender offer

The Orlando Magic made a tender offer to forward James Augustine Friday, giving them the right of first refusal on any contract he negotiates with another team during the free agency period that begins next month.

Augustine, going into his third season, is free to shop his services for a better offer, but the Magic can retain his rights by matching it.

If he receives no other offer around the league, he can continue to negotiate with the Magic or play next season under the terms of the tender offer, which is a one-year deal worth an estimated $700,000.

Augustine is one of six Magic players who officially become free agents on July 1. The others are Maurice Evans, Carlos Arroyo, Keyon Dooling, Pat Garrity and Adonal Foyle. Augustine is the only restricted free agent

interesting, didnt expect that to be honest, probably just insurance Id guess (take that Darko)...kid has a motor (oh that is so Bilas of me)...

After otis failed to get a developmental big somewhere in the draft, this became a no brainer. Had we gotten back into the 2nd round, or late first and taken someone, Arthur, Jordan, whoever, we could of easily let auggie walk. Its clear that Gortat is better than Augustine, so it appears james will be wearing a suit again next season. A guy with little to no upside, sitting on our bench for 3 years, excellent.

Gotta agree. He's been in the NBA for two years and knows our system, so we're probably better off with him rather than repeat the process and picking a fresh second rounder.

I would say that Augustine has quite a bit of upside to be honest...he has a pretty reliable jump shot, he likes to dunk, he can rebound, he runs real well and he's tenacious...just needs a little exposure...not sure about him being the answer for us...just saying, for where he was picked, he definitely has an upside...

I'm really happy about this. I hope we keep him. I saw some good things with him when he got a chance to play. I think he can still develop and I would hate to see him go somewhere else and do well, since we really haven't given him a chance yet.

This is actually just common procedure.

Last year, the Magic even made Mario Kasun, who was still a restricted free agent because the Magic never renounced him, a qualifying offer.

This allows them to retain that right of first refusal.

Even the Grizzlies are making Juan Carlos Navarro, who signed a big deal overseas, a qualifying offer.

It is still unlikely Augustine returns next season but it also is a little bit of insurance in case Orlando cannot upgrade their backup frontcourt this summer.

Agreed, seeing him play in the few games last season you could see his desire, and he can rebound pretty well. Thats why I said it after the draft (in a somewhat joking way) dont worry weve got Auggie! lol. I still would have or would like to pick up another big like dorsey though... but hopefully auggie can help us this season

The only "risk" for the Magic is that if no other team signs Augustine, and he does not go to Europe as Kasun did, the Magic must leave one their 15 roster slots open. But, perhaps Augustine has evolved into a quality practice-squad player against Howard.

I think a lot of you guy's are selling Auggie short. I bet this guy turns into another solid NBA player the Magic did not develop and gave up on too soon.

Augustine showed some offensive skill, it's just his athleticism that is not up to NBA par.
