FA Interest Thread: Searching for a PG

Post#1 » by ClipperDomination » Fri Jun 27, 2008 8:03 pm

From HoopsHype:

The Clippers are expected to shop for a point guard once free agency opens with Sacramento's Beno Udrih, whom they had already made one failed attempt at landing last season, and Toronto's Jose Calderon as early targets. "We will have to address those either through free agency or trades," Dunleavy said. -LA Times

I'd love for us to acquire Calderon but Toronto won't let that happen now that they've made their choice. I'm sure Dunleavy will make a strong push for Udrih again. He's not the solution long term but would be a solid player for us. I really wish we could somehow get Hinrich but another team would likely have to be included to make it work. I hope that we're active in the point guard hunt early this off-season as opposed to last summer.

Yeah, we need a Hinrich/Maggette/3rd team deal. Denver probably wouldn't want Maggette, but if they did, Nene to Chicago, Maggette to Denver, Hinrich to LA. We'll make something happen. I really don't think our PG search will unfold like it did last summer.

I don't see Maggette involved in any S&T's anytime soon. Word to Donald T!

Udrih wouldn't be bad, but he's only a solution to our PG problems for right now. I would love us to get Calderon but I know the Raptors won't let him go.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Udrih is a quick-fix PG nothing more nothing less

You think Udrih would sign for the MLE?

Full MLE and the starting PG job in LA should get him here if the Clippers are willing to offer that. There are other options out there, but if we had to, I'd give Beno the MLE rather than keep the PG situation like it was last season.

Point guard is too critically important a position to mess around over.
Calderon is not available because he intends to stay in Toronto and they intend to keep him, and if he were available, there are teams who want him and could pay more.
Time to get serious about any and all other options --- go hard after Beno of course, and have some good back-up plans if that doesn't work.
Brevin is getting on.
Gotta get a floor general.
Who has some good suggestions?

If we wanted to get crazy, we could create a package for Baron Davis, since he says he's not gonna opt out this year. If we wanted to get crazier, we could rely on Livingston coming back in full form. Like the rest of you guys, I think Udrih would be a nice addition for us this season, but he's not someone I see staying around long-term. We need to get started on this PG hunt early this year, instead of getting stuck with the rejects in August like we did last summer. Our best hope in acquiring any type of solid PG depends on the brass being aggressive early.

We should put together a package for Davis. If we include the Wolves pick and our pick both, we shouldn't have a hard time prying him away. It will be hard to deal for Davis though and maintain depth.

Clips Get:
Davis
S&T Azubuike
Rights to Hendrix

W's Get:
Maggette S&T
Thomas
Knight
Paul Davis
Future MIN Pick
Future LAC Pick

This would also allow us to split the MLE up and work on adding some depth since we wouldn't have any holes to fill.

Kaman/Jordan/Fazekas
Brand/Powell/FA
Thornton/Azubuike
Mobley/Gordon/Ross
Davis/Livingston/FA

I'd net the all-star PG first and then worry about depth later.

Just looking at that starting lineup gets me excited but will the warriors take on Thomas' contract? We need a good PG badly right now. I'd settle for Kirk Hinrich if we can't get Davis at this point.

Thomas is a 2010 expiring, any longer of a deal and I don't think GS would go for it. Contracts that are a year from expiring are becoming more valuable now that the value of expiring contracts seem to have hit an all-time high. If the Bucks were able to move Bobby Simmons, I gotta think we can move Thomas :D

I like the trade loflin. Ot's easier to see what we have after the draft. I think if we would consider doing this deal we would be a playoff team again.

All of us would do this trade, but I do not think the Warriors would be interested...

Not to mention two S&T's in one trade makes it a little more difficult.

Real nice trade scenario back there but GS wouldn't go for it especially since we're divsion rivals.

Chauncey Billups could be had, but Detroit would want Brand. Detroit would of course include other players...
Rip Hamilton is a stain on the Pistons franchise.

I don't think we would give up Brand for Billups, but we'd be happy to get him for other pieces not named Kaman or Brand, which probably will not happen. Something revolving around a Maggette + unprotected '09 1st would be the ideal trade we'd offer, which isn't probably going to make you guys happy.
