Is Kobe 6'4"?

Post#1 » by Squirrel Boy » Sun Jun 29, 2008 2:20 am

Just need to clarify here.

I know he is 6'6" and all but I remember watching a Make A Wish episode and in an article about that episode where Kobe stated to the kid that he was 6'4".

Is it true and if it is, can you guys link me with the video or article where he says it?

I mean losing 2-3 inches before you turn 30 isn't safe.

Thanks again.

Dude's actually 6'7. He's taller than the GOAT Michael Jordan.

Haha, nah, Kobe didn't shrink.

The real deal? An Esquire article on Kobe a few months ago revealed that he was measured at 6' 4.75" - by his wife no less, who found some satisfaction cutting him down. 6'6" is Kobe's in-shoes height. Listing the in-shoes height is common practice in the NBA. Sometimes players are listed in their height without shoes; usually they're European players or there's some other purpose behind it, such as Duncan and KG not wanting to be called centers.

6'5" barefoot for Kobe looks about right. D-Wade measured in at just under 6'4" and Kobe's clearly got an inch on him. Strangely, D-Wade isn't listed in his in-shoes height, which is 6'5". No idea why. Maybe because they want him to play point guard? But guys like Lebron and Melo are listed at 6'8" - their in-shoes height, and they look like they have a couple inches on Kobe. I noticed in the Jazz series that Ronnie Brewer looked just a bit bigger than Kobe, and he's indeed 6'6" without shoes, 6'7" with them.

Just a quirk about the NBA.

^pretty much covered it.

Really though, it's about how high they jump and how they utilize their height with wingspan (blocking, dunking, stealing.... rebounding: Bynum)

Good try, but Kobe's leaning, and there's always camera angles.

These are better pictures, because you see the players lined up, feet showing, on a level camera shot:

It's obvious.

The Great Wilt Chamberlain had a theory for guys actual height. For years he was listed as 7 '0" in his early playing days until one day he decided to measure himself laying down. He measured 7 '2 ", his theory was gravity made you shorter. Later he always claimed his measured height he did himself.

Cause if Kobe is 6'4 3/4" then MJ ain't the 6'6" they claimed him to be because I saw him in person several times up close. And with photos I saw him in with Kobe they look damn near the same height.

So I wasn't wrong after all.

The shoes did add some height.

pretty good Height comparison, look how tall prince is...

Listed height in the NBA is wierd. I met most of Dream Team 2. I'm 6'2" on a good day and Barkely felt like he was maybe 2 inches taller then me and he was a PF. Then I met Grant Hill who was listed at 6'7 i think and he seemed really tall, closer to 6'9" Shaq and Robinson were monstrous, legit over 7ft, but Penny Hardaway who was listed I think at 6'7" also seemed to be only an inch or two taller then me. I met Spreewell once too and he was maybe 2 inches taller then me if that but I think he was always listed at 6'6' or so.

I think some of it is fudging the listings and I also think some of it is probably body type, some guys are just built a way that they look taller then others but are not actually.

Yea, but they don't always wear the same shoes they did on measurement day. That's why they should list w/o shoes height or have a standard shoes heigh of + 1 inch or something.

Haha that's one sexy assssss pic right there. And it shows hight well too...

Melo doesn't seem 6'10". He's 6'8" at best. LeBron's height is true, he seems 6'8".

So the height's seem like it is usually an inch or two off or the players grow, which I doubt. Tay tay looks like he is 6'9" or so in comparison to his listed 6'7".

Cool pic, supaflash. Pretty good for comparisons, except Howard, Lebron, Melo, and Dwade, and Paul aren't wearing the same shoes as everybody else.

Dwight Howard looks a little over 6'10". He must have grown or it's his shoes.
Bosh, measured at 6'10.25"
Prince looks 6'8"
Boozer, measured at 6'7.75"
Lebron, measured at 6'7.25" but he's slouching
Melo looks taller than his measured 6'6.25" - gotta be the shoes!
Kobe looks 6'5"
Redd, measured at 6'4.75"
Kidd looks 6'3"
Wade is out of order, measured at 6'3.75"
Deron, measured at 6'1.75"
Paul, measured at 5'11.75"

No way Kobe is 6'4". He looks spot on at 6'5"

Thats an insane lineup...HAHA Williams has a beard!

Seriously though, height is a funny thing. For example, there is such thing as a short 6'5 and a tall 6'5. It's true.

PS - That just proves how freakishly athletic these guys are, if in fact they are smaller than their listed sizes.
