do you say jamison is better than brand because of brands recent injury? also... trading sounds ok to me but im not sure theres a better player than either of them to be had through trade...

CJ wouldn't improve the team much, but wouldn't affect space much. I like him as a flyer more than any SG taken after Courtney Lee personally and by a good margin.

i think mason is a better version of carney right now. he provides more consistent outside shooting and has a nice midrange shot too. carney is running out of time for me to think he is anything more than a 9th player off the bench. smith and herrmann just provide offense from the 4. they are 3 role players i think would help any team, and could do it relatively cheaply and efficiently

We would have about 13+ million in cap space for next offseason if we stay put. I see no reason to tied up 3-6 million of that in guys like Smith, Mason, or Hermann.

If we got a player like Brand, Roger Mason would be 10X more intriguing.

I would tie up 1.5 in CJ Miles.

From a Mitch Lawrence article. Intereting quote from Stefankis in there.

Philly is expected to try to use the money to improve. Meanwhile, Memphis probably will continue its policy of pinching pennies.

"We're trying to build like Detroit, meaning we're not looking to have that one superstar, but we want to have a lot of good players on the floor together," said Sixers president Ed Stefanski, whose team finished its strong 40-42 season by pushing Detroit to six games in the playoffs. "Detroit is doing it with a different style than us, because our style is to be athletic and push the ball. I know (coach) Mo Cheeks wants me to get him a shooter because he asked me the other day if I could get him one or two. I want to, but we're really looking for people who are athletic and long and defensive-minded. That's our first priority."

For that reason, Atlanta's top free agent, Josh Smith, has been linked to Philly. But he's a restricted free agent and the Hawks can't afford to lose a local product and key part of their team from a credibility standpoint after they gave the Celtics a tougher playoff series than the Lakers. If Philly signs Smith to an offer sheet, Atlanta is determined to keep him.

So who qualifies with that criteria (I'm focusing on the D part the most..with athletic as the next criteria)? These are the closest overall fits IMO.

PG - Duhon? (yuck), Delonte West, Keyon Dooling?, Roger Mason
SG - Quinton Ross
SF - Josh Childress, Pietrus, James Posey, Ron Artest (if opt out), Luol Deng, James Jones
PF - Josh Smith, Elton Brand (if he opts-out), Marion (via trade), Ronny Turiaf,
C - Andris Biedrins

Besides names like Josh Smith, Brand, Marion, Childress and Biedrins the names are not very inpressive (or don't really fit here - Deng, Artest). If we are looking strickly for a defensived minded wing player, Pietrus or Ross would not be bad options.

I would stay away from the undersized guards, simply because we already have Lou. Mason would make sense, he can play both positions and has good size.

I love this quote...reads Biedrens to me!! He's not a defensive player of the year, but put him next to Sam, and the interior defense is very solid moving forward. His name has not come out in many rumors, but I'm hoping they are holding their hand close to the vest.

For me it's Monta Ellis all the way and i'm for trading Iguodala if that is what it takes to get him.
Otherwise lets go for Baron Davis.

well, theres a delicate balance to be had here... if we just stand pat, who is to say we make the playoffs again? one injury could damn us to the lotto. and if we stand pat are we enticing enough for a big name player to WANT to come here? other teams will have offers.

so yeah you have to make sure you dont spend too much on a mason, or smith, but if it rounds out the team and makes us better, then we are all the more appealing to a big name player looking to get a ring with his paycheck.
