What are the benefits of buying out players?

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Sun Jun 29, 2008 6:04 pm

We see it all the time when trades happen and the team buys out the 'filler' that was used for salary purposes for the trade (francis and portland) and other times when a player has worn out his welcome and the team is just sick of him or they want to let players go to a contender (ie tinsley? cassell last year, payton, Zo).

But still, the player still receives his salary and that salary still counts against the salary cap.

So besides opening up a roster spot, are there any other advantages to buying out a player?

If "team A" buys out a player and then "team b" signs him does his cap number still count against "team a"?

You are thinking about "Waiving"
When you buyout you give them their contract money all at once.

When you buyout a contract, the player takes a paycut and is then waived. Unlike "waiving", it needs to be agreed on by both sides and is usually done to players who have larger contracts.

You don't have the player you don't want to have on the team on your team and sign a player you want instead ?

You can save money if both the player and the management agree to buy out the player for less then the contract is worth.

You keep him out of the locker room.

You get an open roster spot.
