The Birdman is horrible---but any big guy you put next to KG looks pretty good-cause KG requires so much defensive attention.

Re: A Birdman may be flying into boston and FA rookie camp
The problem is that Chris is a PF. We already have KG, Powe, and Davis at that postion. There is only 48 minutes at that spot. So we don't need another PF.
The question is if Andersen can play defense at the Center position? We need a center backup C that can rebound and play low post defense. Chris is a good rebounder, but is he strong enough to play low post defense against strong post up guys? If he is, then we should try to get him.

The Celtics certainly had problems with both Atlanta and Cleveland (and would also had with LA) in the length department. I think the Celtics would be better served to decide on keeping either Powe or Davis, and using that spot and PJ Brown's spot for guys like Anderson and Jackie Butler. Anderson is exactly what this team needs, if his skills are still intact. Butler, ironically is a better offensive player than a defensive player. He has nice low post skills. Before he ever left the Knicks, he was starting to get real confidence in the low post, which is what the Spurs saw in him, to offer a contract that seemed excessive, capping at $2.8 million. Think of a taller Big Baby, who at 6'10" can get his shot off and has the height and bulk to guard centers.
With Anderson you have the flexibility against certain teams playing Anderson and Powe at the same time. If Birdman and Butler show that they still have it, they would be excellent, inexpensive additions, that would solve needs and leave the mid-level for Posey. If the Celts needed to use the whole mid-level to sign Posey, maybe they should look at Tyrone Lue as backup PG, let Cassell go, and keep House.

I agree, Andersen is probably more of a power forward then a center on paper. And Boston already features Garnett, Powe, Scalabrine and Davis at power forward where you don't need another forward at that position. However, Andersen poses a potential mismatch for opposing defenses as he can out run the much slower or older centers like if Garnett was playing some at center. So, I see Andersen as being able to get up the floor well with Rondo. Personally, I would rather have the old Andersen, the hustling, athletic, decent rebounder and shot blocker and constant motor, than a Scalabrine or Pollard of today. If Ainge were signing the version of Andersen that earn that multi-year contract with New Orleans before the two-year ban. Then the Celtics could've something in a key bench player.

Omar Cook really interests me as a the veteran backup...he's played for years overseas now and has had some really good seasons--birdman can speak further on this guy--I'd consider him a vet now and he's always been a gifted passer/defender...

I couldn't resist... Here are a few others who you might of thought the thread was eluding to.

Tim Donahue might have wanted to call him for help.

He's probably in the NBA where you aren't...

Omar Cook had an extremely good season. He really matured as a player but I still think he is a better fit for european type of basketball than NBA. He already signed with Unicaja Malaga but has a clause which allows him to get out of the contract if he finds a team in the NBA until July 10th. I doubt that happens.

I'm on the Birdman bandwagon. HIgh energy (no pun) and good size. One would assume that he's matured by now and would want the respect of his teammates. Could play the 4 or 5.
We absolutely have to find a good backup center with the ability to occasionally start. Perk will miss games. This may be more important than signing Posey. We need a birdman or Kwame.

i'd take him, he can backup center on this team fine. Good shotblocker with length.

there really arent that many big physical guys in the nba. andersen played some center in denver and his length can create problems defensively. i dont think we need a big physical guy. perk IS our big physical guy. we need someone that can come off the bench play 15 or so min at center and get the crowd energized. thats andersen to be honest. as a quicker more athletic center hed be a great complement to perk i think.

Re: A Birdman may be flying into boston and FA rookie camp
If they can get him on the cheap, I'd love to see Anderson in Boston. A guy who can play interior defense is always worth taking a low-risk flier on. But if we have to pay the inflated salary that typically goes along with white, American born players, I think I'd prefer to pass. Scals has proven that he has the ability to single-handedly hold down the over-paid white guy position on the Celts without any help.
