Re: Now what Happens?
Lopez is pretty widely seen as a steal at 10 right now, so I would think he would be a pretty clear choice at 11 for a team needing a center. Again, mock drafts and stuff are only worth so much as far as how teams look at players, but Lopez was pretty widely seen as a level above Hibbert/Koufos/his brother as a prospect. And when you have a glaring need at center and you have an opportunity to take a good one, it would seem to make some sense.

Re: Now what Happens?
I LOVE the singletary pick, I honestly think he may turn out to be the steal of the draft. I envision him being the super-sub that Bobby was in his prime. I think we just need to re-sign beno and cut our losses...wait it out. You can always deal a solid-good PG on a reasonable MLE type deal in this league. SOMEONE will have need for him down the road, if thing turn in other directions for us.
Hold onto our deals until they're expirings, and I'm content with our off-season for now...
C: Brad Miller, Spencer Hawes, Shelden Williams
PF: Mikki Moore, Jason Thompson, SAR, Kenny Thomas
SF: Ron Artest, Francisco Garcia, Pat Ewing Jr.
SG: Kevin Martin, John Salmons, Quincy Douby
PG: Beno Udrih, Sean Singletary
I can handle that roster for now...hopefully they gel and improve and we can look to deal Ron/Brad at the deadline for maximum value.

Wow, I mostly agree with Smills for once, lol.
However, I think the first priority of the team is to not use the MLE other than for Beno, and even then, limit it to a 3 year deal or such. We cannot continue to afford to sign the full MLE every single year.
Do not trade for a PG whatsoever, players like Hinrich, Ridnour, etc. are simply not worth trading for, and ultimately are nothing but temporary pieces, something not worth giving up our limited assets for.
Second, I would like to see Artest/Miller/Salmons/Moore moved for younger pieces/picks/expirings like always.
Third, do not, do not, do not, do not, attempt to move Thomas/Shareef at all, unless if its for another 2 year bad contract (ie Hughes). There is no point in moving them at all, they will only cost us positive assets to move, and within a year will have value themselves.
I am perfectly fine with Salmons/Garcia/Douby/Singletary playing the point until next year.

I hate this plan. I don't want to spend the MLE on Beno, if we spend it it should be on a talented younger PG like Lou Williams. Otherwise try not to spend it, and if you do make it for a 2-3 yr deal for only part of it and ONLY FOR YOUNG PLAYERS.
Also, if we don't sign a PG with the MLE, trade for a PG like Kyle Lowry. There are plenty of young PGs around the league like Lowry, Crittenton, Brooks, etc. I don't want to watch Cisco/Salmons play PG for a whole year. I understand if we suck badly next year, we can get Rubio/Jennings/Evans, but I don't think we'll be that bad even if we dumped Miller/Artest for nothing. Hawes/Martin/Salmons/Cisco are too talented to get less than 30 wins, and Reggie isn't a bad coach. Therefor we wind up picking 10-12 again and Collison/Lawson don't impress me any more than Lowry, Crittenton, etc. In fact they probably have less talent. We need to find a talented young PG.
Then you have the PGs like Mo Williams and Hinrich. Hinrich is probably a good fit with this current roster, but he's got a bad contract and already almost 27. Mo Williams is a better player, has a more friendly contract, and is only 25(I think) but he's not a great defender to put next to Martin. I'd rather get a young PG than resort to this option.

Re: Now what Happens?
I think our #1 priority AFTER resolving the whole Artest/Beno question is to do something about the glut of PFs we have. Moore, Abdul-Rahim, Thomas, Williams, and Thompson. Obviously, Moore and Williams/Thompson will contribute. Do we let SAR in the rotation back and see what he can do? Or we just assume he is the same boat as Thomas? Both players have haven't played that much. Especially SAR. Do we just let them expire within 2 years? Are we going to replace Moore as the starting PF? (I would say yes). Moore is a solid role player and shouldn't be starting long term, only a stop gap fix. Well, hopefully, Geoff Petrie would address this issue. We haven't have a dominant consistent threat in the PF position since Webber.

The plan of having Salmons/Garcia/Douby/Singletary start?
I think our views on the MLE are similar, use it on Beno, or someone young. But regardless who it is, don't use all of it and make it a short deal.
Trading for a young PG, I'd be okay with, mainly one of Memphis's point guards, but I am not willing to let go of any future picks/Garcia/Thompson/Sheldon/Hawes. With that said, its unlikely we can pull off a deal, however, it may be possible.
Regarding Hinrich, no no onononononononono. Bad contract and too old. There is no point in trading for him. Mo Williams, possibly? But even then, I wouldn't give up much to get him, therefore very likely wouldn't be able to net him.
I still think we should just have a test run at PG, between Garcia/Douby/Singletary. Many people here are saying Singletary is a legit player and can be a very very good piece, well let him prove it. Douby I think is a bust, let him prove me wrong.

Re: Now what Happens?
I will put money on the fact that unless either Singletary performs like no rookie second round PG has ever played before, or Quincy suddenly develops something close to a PG mentality (along with PG skills), Petrie will do something to change our PG situation. He has said that he wants to try to win with this team next year, and he knows that this team won't be halfway decent if we don't have a decent solution at PG.
Beno is clearly the easiest solution here. And frankly, assuming that the plan is to have cap space in '10, It doesn't really matter all that much if we sign him to a 3 year deal or a 5 year, because as long as his contract is taking up space in that summer, it doesn't make much of a difference. And if we offer him a 2 year deal, we might as well waive good-bye because any team that wants him will out-do that. So I think the most likely result is that we re-sign him. But if we still get out-bid, we have to look at different scenarios. And while trading for a young guy is fine, if he can't run a team right now at all, then I don't know if that's what we're going to do. I think we will probably do that later.

Mitch - I'm sure Petrie will, and don't have any major problems with that. I just don't want to see us overbid for a player like Beno or be forced into a trade for an nonideal player.
My point is simply that, the situation we currently have at PG is not that horrible. We have 4 players that can all split time at the point. Also, a very decent veteran in Johnson that we could resign for cheap.
The likes of Mo. Williams, Hinrich, Ridnour, or long term deals even for Beno should simply be ignored and not even considered.

Re: Now what Happens?
But you're ignoring the fact that this team still wants to remain competitive. It has been said a thousand times. We'll need some kind of consistency at PG for that to happen.
I personally don't think the MLE is that bad at all for Beno. He might be worth a tiny bit less, but IMO, the difference would be pretty insignificant.
I'm also not necessarily for the idea of Hinrich or Williams, but could see the logic in making a move for either. But as of right now, I'd rather go for a stopgap option. And if a fair deal can be worked out for someone like Ridnour, I think that'd be ideal--especially since he expires in '10.

Petrie and the Maloofs have both alluded to it many times.

Because Beno was such a massive downgrade?
They want to stay competitive, but dealing Bibby showed that they know that this team won't be a contender and thus won't be worth paying the luxury tax for. If we weren't in danger of going way over the tax next year, I bet we would've kept Mike. We've made deals in the past to get under the tax, and Bibby was our most movable big contract.

I heard them alluding rebuild also, I don't see how you come to this conclusion, especially with how tough the west is and how far the Kings were from being competitive.
And I don't know how many owners or GMs will answer that they aren't competing, that would sure be great way to sell tickets, but if you want to ignore the reality and hang on this, god bless, that's not a fact.

I don't know what the argument is here. They have said several times "we're trying to rebuild while remaining as competitive as possible". That may not mean a playoff birth in the west, but if Ron is healthy, we can easily be a +.500 team, and that is competitive. If they weren't interested in competing, I doubt Mikki would've been signed.

Were not going to be bad enough to get higher than we did in 2007 anymore, unless we get that big-time luck in lottery draw like the Bulls did.
Ron may well be gone after this season, or by the deadline, but still, at least two of Brad/Salmons/Moore will still be here, plus significant piece at PG (Beno/Duhon/Lowry/J-Will/Hinrich/Watson/Crittenton) + Kevin/Garcia/maybe a rotationalized Douby.. plus various contributions from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd year young players. That's not going to be bad, young enough of a situation to get a top 5 pick.

I thought competitive means competing for something, but I guess we have different meaning for the word, and I'm talking about next year not last year, the experiment has clearly failed.

They have said it several times. If you are winning and losing close to an even amount of games, you are a competitive team in that you are usually doing a good job of competing with other teams. Point being that fans at least won't be completely turned off if the team is decent, which this team clearly can be.

Can you post a link to see the context? Basically you're saying they'd rather be mediocre than being bad, if that's the case, we're in for a very long rebuilding.
And competitive has a clear meaning, I'd like to see where Petrie and the Maloofs changed their perception of that meaning.

I don't really know to like search for certain phrases in sacbee articles, but I'm sure others can back me up here. That has been the common sentiment from Petrie and the Maloofs for a little while now.
