Posey vs. Tony
just read todays herald and it changed my mind. maybe tony DOES stay...for posey. his agent says theyre looking for 4 yrs and 6mil. im not sure how danny makes that kind of commitment to a role player(albeit a good one) when ray and pauls contracts come up 1 and 2 yrs prior. unless you know what youre doing with the big 3 at that time and know what direction youre going in as a ballclub(in terms of resigning, trading in their last year or letting them walk) i dont see how you can commit that amount of years and that kind of money. the easier option would be to let posey leave and NOW resign tony for cheap. i mean does anyone know what theyre gonna wanna do with the new big 3 in 2 yrs?

Offer Posey 4 years 20 million. That is most of the MLE. GET IT DONE!
you have to do whatever it takes to keep the core together. Posey + the Starting 5 = "The Core" Everyone else is expendable except for Thib and PJ!!

Nobody's yet pointed out a plausible scenario in which the Cs shouldn't give Posey whatever money it takes to keep him. Ditto PJ
I imagine the same will be true of Rondo, Ray, Paul, Perk, and KG down the road. Trade 'em? Maybe. Sign 'em? Sure. Let 'em walk? Not bloody likely.

Re: Posey vs. Tony
Not comparable.
Posey is the first backup Small Forward and Power Forward, plus occasional shooting guard.
Tony could slip to insurance shooting guard if Giddens plays well.
But the money the Celtics are likely to offer Tony REALLY doesn't matter.
Their revenue from a deep playoff run gives them at least an atra $30 Million to spend, if they want to, probably closer to $40 Million.
That's right. Luxury Tax is meaningless, essentially, when you go that deep.
Celtics went from a question mark to a Champion the day they signed Posey last summer.
This is not one to screw around on, because of his ability to play 3 positions, and DEFEND at a championship level.
In a best possible world,
Position ********** Starter ********** Backup ************** Insurance Guy
Center *********** Perkins ********* Mourning ************ Mutombo
PF ****************** KG ************* Posey ************* Powe
SF ***************** Pierce ********* Posey
SG *************** Ray Allen ***** JR Giddens ************ Tony Allen
PG *************** Rondo ********* J. Williams or Lue ** E. House
That's 13 players, which is all I think that the Celtics want,
and assumes that Walker agrees to play in Europe for one year.
Requires trading Pruitt, Davis and Scal for Second Round Picks;
letting PJ and Sam retire,
and Scot Pollard sign elsewhere.
Posey can be given 4 years at max MLE minus amount to sign Walker for 3 years, with 8% raises first two years,
Jason Williams or Tyron Lue can get LLE,
Mourning and Mutombo sign for minimum,
Tony Allen gets like two years at $1.8 Million (which will likely be topped by another team that will offer $3 Million),
and Eddie House gets two or three years starting at $1.8 Million with 8% raises.
Eddie House is a shooter, a team can never have enough shooters, plus House has great chemistry,
especially with Paul Pierce.

im just saying how do you extend him past ray AND paul if you dont know what youre gonna do with the big 3 future wise? maybe the landscape changes? wouldnt the point when rays contract comes up be a good place t evaluate what direction youre gonna take with the big 3. if you decide to break it up youve now committed long money to role player that may not have the role hes been used to anymore.
i realize this is somewhat "sky is falling" here but im just trying to show the opposing viewpoint. chad ford mentioned exactly this line of thinking regarding posey on his most recent podcast. dont get me wrong i love posey. we all do. but i can see the possibility of us not being able to commit the kind of years hes asking for because we dont know if were going to be keeping the same group together or not after 2 years.

Were trying to win another championship now not in 2 years when Ray expires, without Posey its going to be a lot harder to do that.

Re: Posey vs. Tony
Yes, but we would be setting ourselfs up in the situation MIA was in pre-Shaq trade and pre-Wade injury.
We're not winning a title with just Pierce and KG anyways so Ray 2 years should be our window... idk how good Ray is going to be next year let alone 2 years from now anyways.
It's up to Ainge, but starting 6 mil is above MLE and 4 years is a little too long. that's just what the agent said though I'm sure starting 5.3 mil at 3 years will get it done [full MLE]

Yeah in 4 years Posey will be 35. I don't think he'll be effective at that age. 2 years is the most we should offer him, with a team option for the following year.
