Calderon reaches agreement with the Raptors

Post#1 » by asdfgh » Tue Jul 1, 2008 12:32 pm

He posted the following on his website:

Early this morning, through my agents, I reached a preliminary agreement with the Toronto Raptors. I want to thank Bryan Colangelo, Maurizio Gherardini, Sam Mitchell and all of the Raptors family for the confidence that they have placed in me. I am sure that together we are going to achieve big things in the future.

Great move for the Raptors. They locked up a great starting pg, If he continues his strong play, he will be an allstar soon.

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

I wonder how much it is worth. Amazing what a single good year can do for you, in particular if it is a contract year.

I will be very interested to see how he plays the next 2 seasons.

Well, it was more than a single good year, he was pretty legit the season before as well, and in some international tourneys for Spain before that. But yes, he has added pressure now and will be playing as a starter for 82 games, something he has not yet done while he split time with TJ.

Good news for Raptor fans (like me), good move by Raptor management in getting this done sooner rather than later.

Yes, but the contract he is going to be getting is going to be based on his play from last season.

Good international play doesn't translate to the NBA (See: Carlos Arroyo). That isn't to say I don't think Calderon isn't a solid player in the league and can't continue to be. But my guess is this contract will pay him between $7-8 million a season, so I am interested if he'll play up to that level, so-to-speak.

I am not expecting him to come out next year and average 18ppg and 10apg next year and become some All-NBA player, but I am curious to see if he continue to be a guy who shoots in the high 40s/low 50s from the field and the high 30s/low 40s from the field with 12-14ppg and 7-9apg or if he becomes a 8-10ppg guy with 5-7apg and shoots low-to-mid 40s and shoots 3s at the mid-30s range.

Good signing, nothing unexpected.

Calderon proved continuously that he can shoot at a high level of efficiency and that he's a careful and deliberate point guard who works the pick-and-roll very well. We know he's not a good defender and that he doesn't push the ball very quickly but that's alright, we'll probably be slower to accomodate JO anyhow.

7 to 8 mil is probably as reasonable a contract as we were going to get, anyhow.

Dude, your avatar cracks me up every time I see it. I've got to know - did they actually call a foul on that play?

I always felt that European teams offer huge contracts to established Euroleague stars and household NBA names.

But that's only 8mio GROSS! I guess Calderon has become Americanized and lost his savvy European reading comprehension, or else he'd know he could've made almost as much NET + housing/car/groupies.

IDIOT!!!

I guess he won't be seeing Artest or Jamison in Euroleague play next season, either.
