NEW YORK: The National Basketball Association hired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Ronald L. Johnson on Tuesday as senior vice president of referee operations, a newly created position to help strengthen the league's officiating programs following the a gambling scandal involving one of its refs.

The move splits executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson's role into two positions, a plan commissioner David Stern announced last fall. Johnson will oversee all aspects of officiating, while Jackson will continue to handle all other domestic and international basketball matters.

a little credibility? a little credit?

what do you think of this move?

what is stern trying to pull here?

so many questions, so little time...but in the end we know there is only one crime!!

I'm sure that his personal credentials, work ethic and honesty won't be called into question; but what about his basketball credentials? I'm assuming that by oversee, he's just going to snap the current NBA Officiating crew into shape, relying on people with the experience in the position to advise him.

God knows that the NBA has needed to do something to address it's inconsistant officiating.

No body is more adept at covering things up than the US Army. I really don't see how this works since I think 70% of fans probably think Stern is behind scenes telling these refs how to call games.

I'm more worried about the NBA still not using instant replay on every last minute play that is questionable. I think it's inexcuseable, we are in the year 2008, and they still don't always use instant replay on a last minute play that is questionable.

He was commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Gulf Region division, from 2003-04, responsible for overseeing $18 billion (€11.4 billion) of reconstruction in Iraq.

Ah yes. Is there any enterprise freer from corruption than the reconstruction of Iraq?

This wont help for conspiracy theorists. They love when things go higher up. Now this just links Stern to the US government.

Why stop here? I think he should hire a tobacco lobbyist, that would really help.

Military officers are great leaders and managers of people. Seems like a good choice if he will put the structure in place to have more oversight for the refs.

This guy is probably bought out by Stern and is made to look as though he is doing something, while he really isnt.

This is a really puzzling hire by Stern. A Former general? How about a hiring a private investigating team first to address allegations of misconduct be refs?

This is what is bothering me about the allegations of crooked refs, Stern has up to this point issued strong denials but besides that has he really done his best to look into it?
It looks more like he's trying to sweep it under the rug and hopes that no one will bring it up again.

The ONLY way the officiating concerns will be fixed is if the league contracts out the officiating to an independent firm and opens up the refs reports and evaluations
