Re: 2008/2009 Raptors Cap, Salaries, Tax Breakdown
$6.5M to start would give him 39.33M over 5 years, it makes sense but then what happens is when Bosh is making $15.8M Calderon will command $7.54 and the cap will be really close, so what I think the Raptors should do is front-load the Calderon deal instead.
So: $10.13M front loaded which would pay him:
$10.13 $9.07 $8 $6.94 $5.88 Total: 40.02
That way when O'Neals contract is up and Bosh is to be resigned they can offset the cost in the future.
Because right now with this roster they can't be contenders without moving Bargnani so it is worth taking a $2-3M luxury hit today and then avoid the $10 luxury hit 3 years down the road.
Sure the roster wouldn't be solid gold now, but the odds of them winning this year are pretty low the idea is to progress and hope your assets grow so you can get one more superstar.
But again it all depneds on MLSE wanting to save money or go for it all.

A deal starting at $6.5 million doesn't seem like enough at all...
That's less than a million more than the MLE.
Calderon talked to the Clippers just after midnight and I'm sure they talked about a much larger # than that.

Plenty of deals start low and increase over time. I don't see why Jose would complain about getting more money as time progresses. Front-loading deals is usually considered a lot tougher to sell players on.

unless Jose signs for $6M a year, this team's going to be in the lux (which is very surprising since MLE and Teachers' are absolutely opposed to lux).

its guaranteed money
its not the NFL where you need to throw portions of the salary into the signing bomus & front load because a guy can be cut anytime
secondly, front-loading (see Miami front loading Odoms deal so he could leave the Clippers) only works if the player already wants a change of location
which is not the case for Jose, at the end of 5 years he will be 40 million dollars richer, regardless of the annual salary breakdown

Re: 2008/2009 Raptors Cap, Salaries, Tax Breakdown
The media speculation is that Jose is getting the same type of deal as Ford - four years, around $33 million, with the possibility of a fifth, player option year.
So the figure of $8-8.5 million continues to ring true.
And with most salary lists I have seen with the team, and given my assumptions about Ukic and Adams, we may have $1-3 million for the last piece.
My updated set of assumptions is that we have payroll commitments for 13 players of $69.8 million, with the tax threshold expected to be $71 million or slighty more. The big unknown is the impact of Garbo's new contract on his buyout - do we have less than $2 million from that buyout on our cap. If it's $1 million, and the lux tax comes in at $72 million, the spread we have will open to the maximum $3 million I suggest.

I don't know if the Raps would want to use up that 2 million then.
They might want that cushion to make trades during the season where they take back a couple more million back in a deal.

Do you think Jose's deal has max increases, or is just flat the way TJs was?

Re: 2008/2009 Raptors Cap, Salaries, Tax Breakdown
So does this mean theres another trade in the works? MLSE has so much money i dont get why all their focus goes to the leafs when its clear their not going to win next season. If the raptors got a 2/3 that could average 20+ then we would be able to win next season. By win i mean the championship. I really think a lineup of:
Calderon
SG(If MLSE was willing to pay)
Moon
Bosh
JO
Could beat either boston or LA. I understand people want Kapono because he was underutilized and with a low post like JO(like Shaq in Miami) He would flourish but the fact is on defense he wont. People that come to mind i know are unrealistic but a guy like VC, Artest, Maggette(not much defensively) but our cap situation would be this then. Lets say we package, Kapono(5.8), AP(4.6)+ Graham(2.5)+ Future pick for Artest+Douby and our cap situation becomes this :
Calderon-8.5 million
Artest-8.6
Moon- 712 000
Bosh-14.4
JO-21.4
Hump-2.6
Roko-2
Douby-1.4
Bargnani-5.2
Delfino-3(resigned)
=67.8 Under luxury tax
-NBA rule is 13 players under contract
- We would have 10( without Adams/Jawai signed as they would be so there would be 12) under contract and still 2.2 million to use on a SF
- Douby can play both SG and PG incase calderon/roko goes down or roko isnt ready
- We would be right at luxury tax
Lineup:
Calderon/Roko/Douby
Artest/Delfino
Moon/SF/Adams
Bosh/Hump
JO/Bargnani/Jawai
Not saying thats enough value for artest because i dont think it is but i think another trade needs to happen in order for us to be under luxury and contend. Now that Artest isnt opting out it might be easier but next year we would be in luxury if artest is resigned for say 10 million. Adams/Jawai doesnt count against the cap because their minimum. Who knows i know people love to keep kapono but if something like this happens it a) makes us contenders and b)helps us be under luxury as well as getting a wing that can play perimeter defense

No i know thats not enough value but if we got someone like that. Maggette made a mistake opting out. Clippers are going hard after brand/Davis and that leaves maggette the odd man out. I could see the clippers thinking of a deal around Parker+Hump+Graham+1st pick for maggette or something like that. They cant have all 3 brand/Davis/Maggette so they could either re-announce his rights along with livingstons or look for a sign and trade who knows though. Clippers are weak after Kaman/Brand so they could want bargnani, they need a SF to come off the bench so who knows

Does anyone know if Garbajosa's buyout was included in the JO deal? I might be reading something wrong in Smith's article, at the end.
"Delfino is destined to play elsewhere because of the financial constraints the Raptors have and because they like the pared-down roster that's been created by the four-for-two trade involving Ford and Jermaine O'Neal and the buyout of the final year of Jorge Garbajosa's contract.
Or is it just Garbojosa's buy out in general?

Why is Jawai listed as earning 711,000 on the first page? He's a rookie 2nd rounder. Don't they get the minimum? For 08/09 its 442,114.

Did it go up to 442,114?
Thanks

WE CANNOT TRADE KAPONO. Kapono is the only guy who came to play in the playoffs for every game. He's mentally focused! Do you remember the 3's he was hitting? I'm telling you guys there's a reason why Pat Riley, Shaq, and Wade all admitted saying the missed Kapono when they didn't repeat.

^^^I agree with you completely, although he is not the greatest small forward, I believe Jason is a very good weapon for a serious team aiming for a championship.
Also, is there any way we could do sign&trade for Childress, what could Atlanta look for?

mag is not that much better than AP i say we should foucs on finding a good back up to AP rather than trying to trade him, he bring just so much more than just his scoring. he is a poor man ray allen
