With our new found capspace, who should we target?

Post#1 » by turk3d » Wed Jul 2, 2008 1:24 am

Now that it looks like it's a done deal, it looks as though that we're going to have a fair amount of cap space (once the deal is complete and if it's a straight up signing which I believe happens on July 9).

So who do you think we should be targeting? Some of them are likely restricted, but we could at the very least wreak some havoc with some of those teams. Josh Smith? Brand maybe? lol. Who would you like to see us get possibly?

Of course, there are a number of trade possibilities out there also.

I hope its not the train wreck that we drafted and sucked in the years he was under contract.

Brand is the only UFA I'd have interest in making a big offer to, but I assume that he's splitting the Clippers money with Baron.

Smith, Iggy and Deng are the best RFA's. Smith would make a very athletic front line, (likely followed up by a Harrington for center & guard depth trade) and Atlanta might not match a big offer. Iggy would be the best fit, with another wing who can handle the ball some to complement Monta - but it's hard to see Philly letting him go. Deng is good, but more of a half-court player. Chicago is cheap enough that he might be signable, but I expect that in a pinch the Bulls overpay to match an offer to Deng and just let Gordon walk.

After that there are a bunch of rotation players that would at least fill out GS's depth, but not make a major impact.

The more I think about it, Maggette seems like the most likely option, even though I don't like the idea. GS will want to bring somebody in to save face, and the good RFA's will be kept by their current teams. Maggs will want something over the MLE, and with the Clippers renouncing his rights they'll need a team under the cap, and at this point that's pretty much GS.

HELL NO TO COREY MAGGETTE.

We worked so friggin hard for the cap-space we have right now. Chris Mullin, please dear god don't screw up our cap again. Be patient and wait until the right player comes along to complete our young core.

Do not panic when Baron is gone, and then waste our cap space on Kirk Hinrich or Mo Williams .

Don't overpay some player simply because he's the best available player on the market (Rashard Lewis).

Don't overpay any player.

Stay fiscally responsible and smart, and we could have a shot at Lebron James or Dwayne Wade in 2010.

I don't want Maggette, but I kind of sense it could happen. Of course I really don't want to overpay Maggs.

4yr/$32M - meh

5yr/$60M - really pissed

I want Iggy(sorry LF!), I think he's a great fit next to Monta in the backcourt, he can handle and defend. He's only 24, avg'd 20 ppg, almost 6 rebs, 4 asts, 2+ steals. And he's still getting better.

If it keeps Gilbert out of the Warriors PG spot at $20mil per to never pass to anybody, I'd gladly minorly overpay Iggy to play defense next to Monta. Count me in 100% How much can we offer him?

+1

with the talented guards coming up in the west, its going to be important to have a STARTER (not just a defensive "specialist") that wants to guard the other teams best player - Roy, Williams, Paul, Kobe, etc.

I think this team uses some of it on a starting player(SG or SF) and a couple real NBA bench guys. Most importantly, get Biedrins and Ellis locked up first.

I stopped by just to mention Iggy.

You could get a quick response from the Sixers, because they will need the cap space to go after Josh Smith.

The guy I don't want is Arenas. Looks like he's staying a Wizard anyways. I would focus my energy on Josh Smith if I were in control. For PG I'd go after Daniel Gibson. Nachbar might be someone to look at too. Man, too bad we didn't have all this extra cap space to play with going into the draft.

If Arenas re-signs with the Wiz, I will kiss him on the mouth.

add me to the "want iggy" list.

And not as a impulse decision due to baron leaving... i've been on the bye-bye-baron train for a while now.

I was relieved when I heard Washington went up to 127 from 100.

He'll take that offer.

Iggy would be nice although I wouldn't be surprised if Philly locks him up real quick now that it appears that Brand is staying in LA and Baron's no longer available.

The Magic have reportedly already offered Maguette their MLE (good for us and probably a nice move for them too).

If he doesn't, I'm going to kick him in the snatch. I don't want to pay a PG $20mil per not to pass to anybody. You put Gilbert in our sculpture garden offense and he'll take 40 shots a game.

I would more interested in making trades for short term rental players. I would make a deal of Raef La Frenz , Steve Blake, and Frye for Al Harrington. All the players fall off the cap. Portland probably would send a future pick.

I'd also give Shaun Livingston a 2 year small contract gamble.

Another team to look at is Harrington for Szerbiak and future #1

Two things - I think that without Baron (or a PG), Golden State isn't exactly a playoff contender in the West. I think it's possible GS might take this opportunity to wipe the slate clean and try to make deals for expiring contracts, draft picks, etc. and rebuild.

Secondly, I think that the fact that GS immediately turned around and offered Gilbert Arenas a max deal shows what they think their greatest need is - a PG! I'm definitely not convinced that they feel like Monta will be able to play PG for any significant portion of time - and I think it's much more likely that GS might try to use that cap space in a trade to get an available PG through trade (Hinrich, Mo Williams, Felton, Chauncey, Watson/Ridnour, Barbosa, or Lowry + the baggage they would make you take to get him (Antoine/Buckner) ) then to try to sign a free agent SG/SF like Iguodala or a PF like Smith when they already drafted two young PFs in the last two drafts. I think there are plenty of SG/SFs who already play well in the system like SJax and players waiting for time like Belinelli. I think they could also re-sign some or all of Azubuike, Pietrus, and Matt Barnes.

Basically, IMO, if Arenas falls through, I would look for them to start looking for a PG trade.
