DeSagana Diop Headed Back to the Dallas Mavericks

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Wed Jul 2, 2008 9:22 pm

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3471169

Free-agent center DeSagana Diop on Tuesday gave a verbal commitment to sign a new contract to return to Dallas Mavericks, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Diop, traded by the Mavericks to New Jersey in February as part of the Jason Kidd deal, will receive the Mavericks' full mid-level exception in a five-year deal starting at nearly $6 million.

Diop cannot officially sign and the Mavericks cannot officially comment until July 9, which is the first day NBA teams can announce signings and trades after a league-wide moratorium on roster moves is lifted.

Diop was a key member of the Dallas team that toppled its in-state rivals from San Antonio and reached the 2006 NBA Finals. It was the franchise's first trip beyond the Western Conference finals.

Dallas needed him back to get back their interior defense they once had... as well as more mobile big man.

He's one of the top defensive bigs in the league, and his mobility and overall size is where his seperation is from other players. He's an above-average mid-level player. He's insignificant offensively, but defensively he's quality, so I think he's worth that kind of money. Especially for Dallas.

Dallas gets that defensive presence that they have needed back in the middle.

With that in mind, does this put the Mavs back in the mix of things? Do they still need another piece to be that true contender again?

They still need a inside scoring presence of significance next to Dirk... and need 1 or 2 more finishers for Kidd.

Actually with the luxury tax Diop is gonna cost Dallas well over $60M. That's some serious paper for guy with career averages of 2.1 (ppg), 3.9 (rpg), & 1.1 (bpg). Good for him though.......

Way too much for someone like Diop. He's a decent backup, but he's been way overhyped since the trade.

Is definetly over-paid but he has exactly what Dallas need, so in this particular situation i'd probably say it's a fair enough deal.

It's clear that Dallas needs a defensive big and there are not that many big men on the free agent market. Besides he already knows the system.

lmao.

Seriously...6 million per for this guy? The Mavs aren't even going to compete this season if this is their big move. They're going to rebuild next summer once this team fails to make the playoffs...

I like the idea of signing Diop. He was good for them when he was a Maverick. He really shored up their interior defense.

But I'd be lying if I didn't think they bet against themselves.
