Team president Rod Thorn said DeSagana Diop, who came to the Nets from Dallas in the Jason Kidd deal, likely is headed elsewhere. On the first day of the free agent negotiation period, Diop was offered "a really good deal," according to Thorn.
Signs were pointing to Diop returning to Dallas. The Mavericks, Heat, Spurs and Bobcats likely offered Diop the midlevel exception, if not more. The Nets weren't going to go that high and always thought they would have trouble keeping Diop. -- The Record

With this move out the way do any of you see any OTHER big changes in the big D (possible trades?) or is now all else we have to look forward to is wait until the summer league and pray for more Brandon Bass stories. I'm really hoping that this is not the peak of the Dallas off season transaction wise.

Re: ESPN: Diop for full MLE
Thanks Rand10 for that quote of NJ called about George.
If Diop is set to make about $6 mil, that means we need to match a trade of $4.8 mil. Eddie Jones makes up $1,976,400 and George can make up the other $3.
George + Jones + cash to buy Jones out for Diop
Keep the MLE for any one of the following...
Kelenna Azubuike, James Posey, JR Smith, Mickael Pietrus, or Corey Maggette. Swingmen mentioned that I don not want...Matt Barnes, Ricky Davis, James Jones, Bonzi Wells, and Michael Finley),
Captain_Obvious wrote:On the other side, i dont know if i read it here or in another thread, if the Nets really talked with Devean George, there must be an agreement somewhere. They can get George without using their MLE (hope theyre over the cap) if they trade with us for Diop. They were probably talking exactly about this with Devean and wanted to know if he accepts. Of course such a deal could get larger.
Diop has just agreed to the possibility of joining our team and his contract. The deal cant go through till a new deadline next week IIRC.
Anyway, welcome back Diop.

Re: ESPN: Diop for full MLE
wow. good old mavs FO. overpaying their own players. I dont know if the several sources really speak the truth when they say that diop had several offers. I mean, the guy hasnt averaged 3 lousy points yet! has not an average of 5 rebounds, as a freakin center?!
dont get me wrong, I do like diop. but just not at that price. but one could have bet that the mavs would spend their entire MLE on him. sad thing is that they dont even seem to have cared for other possibilities.
goddamnit I just hope they have a trade up their sleeves to get as a nice SG cause I dont want to enter the season with eddie freakin jones as our starting SG.
welcome back diop

JES did u just suggest Ricky Davis?
I would stop being a Mavs fan if we signed Ricky "no" D for anything more than the minimum.

hph6203 wrote:1. Diop is worth the MLE. If you don't think so, then you haven't been paying attention to what players are getting what contracts. And to the people who say "James Posey" I laugh in your face. I'd MUCH rather have Diop than James Posey. It's almost laughable that someone would even bring his name up. Posey plays PF, and wouldn't get many minutes here. We didn't have a back up C, and Diop fills that role better than anyone out there. We needed a C WAY MORE than a SG.
If a guy that can't even get to 3 points a game is worth the MLE, then 99% of the league should be worth the MLE. Is there a center you think isn't worth the MLE?
Posey doesn't play PF.
We don't have a backup C but at the same time, we don't have a starting SG.
2. You're all grasping at phantoms, several of them. First of all Maggette hasn't signed for the MLE with anyone yet. Secondly, even if he does sign with a team for the MLE doesn't mean he would have signed with the Mavs for the MLE. There's a lot that goes into a player signing with a team. You're all assuming you can talk a player into joining a team, that's not the case.
Whats the hurry? Are you telling me that after two days of free agency, the Mavs knew how much Maggette was going to get and where he was going. Why not wait at least another week to try to get a better feel for the situation? We know we might not have gotten him, we are mad that we didn't even try.
So, before you all go off the handle on the Mavs front office, sit back, take a breath and consider that the Mavs had no back up C option, and have several options for the starting SG role (whether you like them or not). A back up C at this stage was much more important than an upgrade to the SG.
Who are your options at SG? Please don't say Terry. We have tried that for years and we know that doesn't work. What option do we have that would start for at least three other teams in the West? Hell make it two. Do you honestly think the Mavericks are going to win a title without a legitimate #2 or without a defensive stopper at guard? I still don't think we get out of the first round even if we had Diop. Do you?
EDIT: The more I think about it, the more I'm laughing at all of you saying "Give Maggette the full MLE", because there is absolutely NO ONE I would want playing C behind Dampier on the team right now. There are plenty of people I'd accept as a starting SG already on this roster (whoever it is couldn't possibly be worse than Eddie Jones). Who would be behind Dampier? Dampier can play maybe 30 minutes a game. Who gets the other 18? Dirk? Bass? Those 18 minutes = lose 75% of our games, because it would be open season on the Mavs. Now 28-32 minutes of Maggette does not even begin to make up for that grand canyon size crack in the Mavs' line up.
I disagree with this whole premise. It isn't that difficult to find someone who can average 3 and 5 and it shouldn't cost you 33 million to do it. When are the Mavericks ever going to find someone who can average 22 and 6 again, or someone who can play lockdown defense on the best guards in the game?

Not here bro. That last group starting with Barnes are players I do not want but have been mentioned with the Mavs.
We are better playing 5 on 4 than playing 5 on 5 if that 5th guy is Ricky Davis.

How many centers get 5.2-5.4 rebounds and 1.2-1.4 blocks in a third of a game?dirtyfilthynasty wrote:hph6203 wrote:If a guy that can't even get to 3 points a game is worth the MLE, then 99% of the league should be worth the MLE. Is there a center you think isn't worth the MLE?
Diop is easily worth MLE. Just because he didn't get burn in NJ because he was not in there plans and here because of Damp/Bass/Dirk all sharing center minutes does not mean he is not worth MLE money. Problem is, we added to a role that Damp fills and did not address our needs.

You guys conviniently missed the fact that 3 other teams including, the team you call smart for going after Maggette, San Antonio, offered Diop their full MLE. But Donnie and Cuban are morons, they just got the 5th best free agent in this class to come here.

I'd take Diop over Udrih, and I meant of those available. Jamison was never available.

Re: ESPN: Diop for full MLE
You could argue that Diop is the reason we got to the Finals. He took over overtime of that game 7 in SA. I think we are all remembering the Diop that was here the last year, when he was in Avery's doghouse for some reason.

It's masterful bonmots like that that have him where he is today.

What we tried for years was playing Harris and Terry together, not Kidd and Terry. Big difference there. At this point in his career Kidd is better suited guarding 2's than he is point guards. Terry isn't a great defensive player, but he can stay with those quicker 1's much more effectively than Kidd. I think they're a good fit for each other.

Who guards Kobe, TMac, Ginobili and every other star shooting guard/small forward in the league? Do you think we can be successful counting on Jason Kidd to take the hardest defensive assignment and run the offense? I don't.
