We need one. I haven't heard anything from Sund suggesting that we are looking for one. There are a few free agent options, i.e James Jones, Kareem Rush, Pargo, etc. It seems like it would be very possible.

How much $ the Hawks have to pursue a shooter will be determined by the Smith and Childress offer sheets.

The shooter is the offseason's 4th priority (after a vet big man).

Regardless of the size of the Joshes offer sheets, can't we use the mid level exception, 5.8 million seems like it would do the trick easily. James Jones is who I want, and I think his market value is probably in the 3-4 milliion range.

Can? Yes.

Will? Not likely. If the Hawks keep both Joshes, they'll be limited to minimum or near minimum offers to fill out the rest of the bench.

I want Kareem Rush, but I'm probably just biased because I was a huge fan of him in college... he's sort of a homeless man's Joe Johnson

The Hawks extended a qualifying offer to him, making him restricted. Looks promising that he'll be a Hawk again next season.

LOL

I read Brent Barry opted out today. A veteran shooter with a championship pedigree. If ntohing else, he could provide leadership and serve as an example to our young guns how a real winner prepares and practices and plays.

I still maintain a more veteran squad would have at least put up a fight in game 7 in Boston.

Well, Richardson won't help our shooting problem, because he doesn't play. Aside from having a cheep price tag, he made 700k last year, why would we even bother re-signing him.

Barry would be awesome, better than James Jones even.

If J-Rich stays, I see him getting a real chance to work his way into the rotation early in the year. The kid has a beautiful stroke.

In two years, J Richardson, has played 155 min. and hit 9 3's, I don't see him as all of a sudden being the answer. But his small salary might help save room for whomever the answer is.

Has anyone heard what Sunds plans are for the summer other than signing the Joshes?

That's actually a pretty good ratio, to be honest.

Well Mr. Smith in his blog today in the AJC tried to answer the question. He said he hasn't heard anything specific from the organization regarding a shooter or any players for that matter, which is discouraging. But his ideas which I linked to were James Jones and Jarvis Hayes. He mentioned that if Jones becomes available the Hawks should go after him, well I'm pretty sure he is a free agent.

Some other free agents that I hadn't thought of are Pietrus and Posey. Posey would probably require at least the entire mid level exception, and be well worth it in my opinion. It is somewhat discouraging that there are no "rumors" of us going after a shooter or anyone for that matter. I would be very disappointed if we made no moves to improve over the summer.

TWO NAMES ON MY BRAIN: I know we’ve debated endlessly around here about the Hawks adding another shooter with size their mix but few names have surfaced that anyone confirms the Hawks have actual interest in.

Two names that have come up in conversations I’ve had the past two days that would seem like ideal fits for the Hawks are James Jones and Jarvis Hayes.

Jones is the sharpshooter from Portland (he shot 44 percent from deep last season and save for the 24 games he missed with a left knee injury, was one of the better bench players in the league last season, averaging eight points per game in a tough minutes situation on a talented Portland team).

There’s a good chance Jones signs back with Portland. But if he becomes available, I’d be chasing him down if I were the Hawks, a team that needs outside shooters in the worst way. He ranked third in the league in 3-point shooting this season and has played on winning teams in Indiana and Phoenix during his career.

Most of us are already familiar with Hayes, whose name appeared here frequently two years ago when I was in my “The Hawks should trade for Brendan Haywood and Jarvis Hayes” phase, which was before Al Horford was drafted and the Hawks traded for Mike Bibby (adding the second outside threat needed to take some pressure off of Joe Johnson on the perimeter).

The former Georgia star has the experience, skill-set and price tag that would fit well with what the Hawks are working with. He’s also proved to be a quality player in a reserve role, most recently in Detroit, capable of making a splash when called upon (I watched him stroke seven 3-pointers against the Hornets late in the season on his way to a 29-point outing).

Again, these are guys that make sense to me. I don’t know if the Hawks are interested in them or not and I wouldn’t expect anyone to share that information right now anyway, since those guys won’t be in play until later on during this free agent frenzy.

But if we’re talking about the Hawks needing shooters with some size to come off that bench as game changers, these are two vets that would clearly seem to fit the bill.

Both of them have playoff experience and the requisite size (6-8 for both and 220 pounds for Jones and around 230 for Hayes) and skill to help this team out in a major way next season.

i don't know if we'll be able to get a good one. i think that we are still going to bring back mario west (especially if childress leaves), he might take up that spot.

if he doesn't though i would like to get jarvis hayes. i wanted him last year and i'm not sure the pistons want him back. he would give us a true backup 2.

Again, the Hawks can only afford a good shooter if they let Childress go.

Don't get your hopes up, guys.

It won't happen until free agency shakes out, but I still feel we need to offer Seattle Zaza and a future 1st for Wilkins and Petro. The combination of cap savings and a pick should persuade them. Petro can get the job done in the more limited minutes of being a backup for Al. Damien Wilkins isn't my top choice as a shooter, but he's a capable 3 point shooter and perimeter defender.

That's about as much as we can add without relief Speedy retiring for health issues or parting with Josh Childress. I would still love to parlay Josh Childress into a SF/PF combo from Portland or San Antonio. I just don't see the 1 man backup system working over whole seasons and moving us forward.
