Why are the Lakers not pursing Cory?

Post#1 » by Dexmor » Fri Jul 4, 2008 5:35 pm

1.He averaged 22 a game.
2.He is Kobe's friend.
3.If we don't get him the other candidates as of now are the Spurs and C's. Think that could be a mistake?
4.If we lose Odom we have Cory and that means alot more flexibility.
5.SF is clearly our weakest position if Odom can't guard sf's.

Have we made him an offer and it just hasn't been public?

we can assume just about every team out there has made him an offer..that would include the Lakers
but unless it becomes public we may never know.

I believe there are better options out there for this Laker team, and they realize it.

Think of how the Lakers have spent their MLE the last couple of years. They usually tried to add the "best" player that was available to them.

Corey is a nice player, but he just doesnt fit what this team needs.

The guy's biggest strength is his scoring.

Scoring is always nice, but guess what? Lakers are STACKED when it comes to scoring. Lakers are 4th in the league in PPG (only 2ppg behind the 1st place team), and are 3rd in FG% (3 FG% points less than 1st place).

Considering Bynum and Gasol havent played together yet, I expect those two ranking spots to improve for the Lakers.

What we need is a 3pt shooting SF (not that he's going to be expected to contribute 22ppg, but to keep teh defense spread and honest to their man), who hustles and plays defense.

Ariza is the closest we have to that, but his shaky outside shot hurts this team. Luke and Radman arent close to fitting those three categories. Same with Maggette.

Other FAs out there have the ability to fill these categories, which Lakers have shown interest in, that fill this role a lot better than Corey Maggette.

Lakers do need back up Kobe help. I mean when Kobe is out due to his finger surgery? If Sasha leaves, does that mean Trevor plays SG til he gets back?

Reading through all these various topics, I can't help but stray from the fact that James Posey is the best fit for this team. Not Corey Maggette.

maggette helps the lakers MUCH more than posey would

a player like maggette would allow kobe to fall back on scoring and put ore energy into playing defense

posey wouldnt look like a shutdown defender if he was on the lakers. maggette is the much bette player

^ James Posey is the better fit. Corey has a great offensive game but that is not the only thing we need. We need defense and from what i have seen of corey, he can stick with his man but he doesn't necessarily stop him. So i am really glad that they arent going after him. If we were to go after corey id put james jones on the list....and then id still stick with james jones.

Read what I wrote above.

And to add to my point, I also think Posey will help out Kobe's offensive game more than Maggette would.

Posey will force his defender to stay with him. There's no cheating off of him because of his 3pt shooting ability.

Maggette lacks this ability.

if the lakers were going to get cory and we need a def. stopper still...
we can go for q.ross, pietrus for the lle
but posey would give us that def. stopper with starter potential
honestly, we dont need that much offense we were already near the top in the league in scoring
true 50CAL would lighten the load for kobe but it'll take away min. from ariza who still needs to develop a off. game as equal to his def. game
posey in the C's played the 2,3,and 4 he's a thick body defending LO pretty well...
trade radman for artest and we got a deep off. and def. team
the chemistry needs to flow right out the bat but we will be the hands down favorites to sweep through the playoffs n finals

"Pursing" sounds a little shady and dark.... lets hope they are not 'pursing' Corey....

so he's kobe's friend, does that mean we have to go after all his friends
why don't we try and sign some of pau's friends or vlad's

I guess it would be our best interest to actually hope C-Maggz signs with Boston (lesser of two evils), since that would clear Posey for a quick landing in LA. If Maggette signs in Boston, they don't have room for Posey. If Maggette signs in San Antonio, they get even better, also leaving Boston's MLE wide open.
