Post#1 » by wajr » Thu Jul 3, 2008 4:58 pm

Hello everybody. Toronto Raptor fan here. Apparently Matt Devlin has been given the job of the Raptors play by play guy. I'm just here to get some feedback on his work. Thanks allot.

I found him annoying, less so than Steve Martin, though.

You've got an excellent announcer. I think you guys will like him up there.

I will be watching a lot of Raptors games this year. Devlin is a great person and an excellent announcer; It's great that he got a job with a NBA team.

Does that mean that Chuck will finally be off the air?

God I hope so!

Tim, Sid and Cabbie should call Raps games. That would be sweet!

I liked him a lot. If anything was annoying to me it was the ticket advertisement stuff he had to read constantly but that's not his fault.

If the Toronto fans expect their announcers to be even half as biased as they are, they'll hate Devlin less than one week into the season, after he fawns over some opposing player.

He's very professional, but every telecast seems as though he's auditioning for something better, so don't be surprised when he acts like he cares as much about the team playing against the Raptors, as he does the Raptors.

I prefer someone at least a little bit biased; if I wanted to hear an announcer kiss the other team's ass, I'd tune into the other team's broadcast.

Steve Martin might not be as "professional," but he has the perfect amount of homer-ism. Not over-the-top, but it's not as if he's some completely impartial observer called in on sudden notice to announce the game, either.

Chuck resigned from the Raptors and has taken a job as the Bulls radio play-by-play man due to family reasons. It all came down literally days after he became a Canadian citizen.

Can't say that I will be sad to not have to endure that idiot calling Raps games any more. Now all they have to do it get rid of his idiot side kick Jack and I wont have to watch Raps games with the volume turned down any more!!

Tim, Sid and Cabbie for '08.

Get 'er done!

i get what you are saying ham, but at the same time i never feel like i learn anything watching steve. matt always brought interesting info and nuggets about the other team. you could tell that when he went home at night he sat in front of the tv watching league pass. i want to feel like the guys calling the games know more about the players in the league than i do, not just that they read the media guide before the game started.

my all-time dream lineup of announcers would be:

rick kamla from NBATV doing play by play - dude has got to be the biggest hoops junkie on tv.
hubie brown doing color - my alltime fav. noboby breaks it down like hubie.
jim barnett from the warriors doing color - the warriors broadcast as a whole is fantastic, at least for me.
stephanie ready on the sidelines - and of course, the one-and-only queen of the bobcats.

Good lineup. Agree on Kamala and Ready, though I'd rather listen to Van Gundy or Collins than Brown, but I discriminate based on age.

I never got to listen to Matt Devlin a lot since most of the Bobcat's games were on Time Warner cable. Hopefully though, they bring back Steve Martin for the Fox Sports South coverage of the team. Steve Martin has been in the Carolinas for awhile. I remember his voice from the early days of the Hornets and plenty of ACC football and basketball games.
