Hoopsworld Take on Posey/Maggette Situation

Post#1 » by Jammer » Fri Jul 4, 2008 11:01 pm

Interesting take in this article posted at noon on the 4th of July.

Here is the link:

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9361

But, in the next paragraph regarding Chris Duhon, the writer has it wrong.

Duhon is an unrestricted free agent, so no sign & trades are necessary.
Duhon has apparently chosen the Knicks Two Year offer,
with the promise of a chance to start,
over the Magic's wait and see potential 3 year, $10 million offer.

There seems to be disagreement among NY writers whether
Stephon "I'm paid to shoot" Marbury will be bought out or kept around.

Maggette made a lot of fuss about wanting to be traded where he could start, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Spurs-as-frontrunners story were true.

All I can say about the article is that if Posey has won two championships and is in it for the money, I would rather bring a guy like Maggette who is hungry for a championship in the fold. The plus to bringing Maggs in is that we would get a little younger behind the big three, but with a veteran who has been in the league for awhile.

I still don't want Maggette anywhere near this team, let the Spurs have him, I'd rather lose Posey than sign Corey.

I'd rather have Posey or Pietrus, just because Maggs can't defend for beans.

I would rather have corey. IF both are getting paid equally, give me the guy who averaged 22. ppg on 17 shots over the 7.1 ppg guy who is a nice chemistry guy. Give me talent.

I love poz, but you take maggette if there is a choice

james is a great defender
maggette isnt----but plenty of people thought the same about paul
the focus on D has changed dramatically over the past decade with KG and Tibs
obie focused on D, but what we are able to do now hasnt really been done B4

we need scoring off the bench, paul and rays minutes reduced (esp ray), and a replacement for ray in the next 2 years; or maybe sooner

Maggette is hungry and seems willing to sacrifice
I just hope he doesnt wear #50, b/c that means house is out

51 or 52 would look good on maggs

Lets not forget that most of the playoffs Mr. Posey was a step slow on his man defense (though his help D in drawing charges was elite) but he is getting older and as I have said in other threads takes seasons off after he had good seasons. He is getting older and I would not commit to him past the expiration of rays deal.

As much as I like Posey, I agree about him being a step slow in the playoffs. Furthermore, while Magette may not have a reputation for being a defender, take a look back at Ray Allen's defensive reputation before he came here, he was considered a straight defensive liability. Pierce also was not considered a good defender by the national media, though he did turn it on at times, the problem was he was generally not on good defensive teams. If we have to lock up 4 or 5 years of contract on one of these guys, give me Maggs, he's a little younger and brings more to the table. Besides being a force off the bench I'd rather have him starting for stretches if Paul or Ray get injured.

Maggette must have some sort of defense or Pops wouldn't want him on the Spurs. Pops takes pride in his defense as a team as much as the Celtics do, so I would like Maggette in Celtic uniform. Why couldn't Maggette start with Ray coming off the bench?

I think Ray off the bench would be very possible. I will admit though Maggette scoring off the bench creating his own shot would be key.

Maggette starting and Ray off the bench doesn't make as much sense. Maggette is too similar to Pierce and they might get in each other's way. Allen provides great spacing which opens up driving lanes for Pierce.

What you seem to be saying is that Maggette playing next to Pierce doesn't make sense.

But Ainge and Rivers evidently disagree.

Indeed, if Leon is one of our key reserves, the paint will be MORE crowded when he's in then when the starters are on the floor.

Pierce and Ray is the ideal fit.

Magette and Ray is a great fit.

Pierce and Magette is a decent fit made possible by the talent levels between them.

I see Pierce and Ray starting. With Magette getting a lot of playing time given rest to Pierce and Ray. And then when it's Pierce and Magette out there, Magette creates and Pierce plays jumpshooter for awhile. Pierce is a good enough shooter to do this for 10 mpg and still have an amazing attack.

The only promblem with Magette coming here is the same promblem as last year, wich is who guards the big explosive PG/SGs guards like Wade,Areneas? Oh well it's only two in the East I can think of... hopefully injury bugs strike or neither makes the playoffs. Magette would be great to have for King James.
