GGs' Spot

Post#1 » by SD2042 » Sun Jul 6, 2008 6:58 am

It's time for our OT thread to come back so we the fans have any issues or events that we wish to talk about. Case in point, the Seattle Sonics losing the final battle to keep their team in Seattle. After negotiations between the Sonics owners and the City of Seattle. The owners won out with moving the Sonics on to Oklahoma City. Really a hard loss if you're a Sonics fan that has supported your team for a long time and now have to face the reality of losing your team to another city after 5 decades of history.

I feel horrible for the Sonics fans. However, anyone with ideas of the Grizz being swept away to the Pacific Northwest in the next 5 years needs to read up on the agreement that the Grizz have with Memphis. They aren't leaving anytime soon.

I know that the Grizz are a small market team and they are in rebuilding mode. I just wonder how some people seem to think the Grizz could be uprooted from the city within the last 5 yrs. The Grizzlies stil have a long term contract to fulfill for the city.

Not saying the Grizz/city contract will be either legally broken or re-negotiated --- but the Sonics had a contract to play for two more years in Seattle, too.

You're correct, however, the buyout for the Grizz is much, much higher. Plus the team would have to be purchased at Heisley's price. Here's some more info that someone more in the know than I put up recently:

No, the team is currently not being shopped around. Also, the team has a very restrictive contract with the city. Here is a quote from an article Geoff Calkins wrote in our local paper a couple of months ago regarding this exact issue:

"There's a separate non-relocation agreement, for starters, stating that "during the first 10" seasons in FedExForum, the team "shall not relocate from the City of Memphis."

That's a simple "shall not relocate." Enforceable by injunction. Hard to see how the team would get around that.

Starting in year 10 -- which is a full six years from now -- the team can move only if certain ticket and suite sales minimums are not met.

Even then, the city and county have the right to step in and buy enough tickets or suites to meet the minimums.

But say the city and county pass on that one. Say someone wants to buy the team and move it out of town. The city and county would still have the opportunity to find a local buyer to match the purchase price.

The hurdles are starting to stack up, aren't they, Velma? And we haven't even started talking about money yet.

Any out-of-town buyer would also have to pay off the debt service on FedExForum, a number that doesn't dip below $100 million until 2015. And the buyer would have to pay back FedEx for a portion of the naming rights.

And the buyer would have to get the NBA's approval and pay the NBA's relocation fee, which would surely be a good deal more than the $25 million the Grizzlies had to pay to leave Vancouver.

Translation: The team isn't moving anytime soon. It's just not. In this time of finger-pointing and misery, it seems important to recognize that."

So, no. If Seattle wants a new team, they need to look elsewhere.

Already have the situation handled. Remember to hit the exclamation point button at the right of your post to report the violation if boogie nor myself aren't around when the incident occurs.

BTW, according to local news. It appears that former Tigers SG Doneal Mack wants back in with the Tigers. Several questions to this issue. Why is Mack coming back? What happened with him going to Louisiana? Also Cal has been signing recruits left and right at Mack's position. Which means that MAck is basically out of luck.

It has been said that Mack was looking to go somewhere that he could be guaranteed 30+ mins/game. I guess he didn't think he had good odds of getting significant minutes if he stayed here. Now, if he gets back on the team, he will probably play about 6min/game as a shooting specialist.

The word is that his dad and advisers pushed for the move. Mack's heart was really never into the move, hence the attempt at a return.

Local M-town and former MMA champ, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was arrested in CA on Tuesday after failing to pull over when a cop saw that he had a flat tire and talking on a cell phone(now illegal in CA). Apparently Rampage went to road rage mode and hit couple of cars during a 5 minute chase that ended at Newport Beach when his tire finally came off the rim and he had to stop. Rampage was taken to OC Jail where his bail was later posted. Can't say what Rampage was thinking. Really was a dumb thing he did, runnin like he robbed a bank or something.

Also, all the talk about Brett Farve wants back into the NFL and Green Bay. I don't understand why the guy wanted to retire the way he did. From the way he played last season, he looked like he had a couple of more yrs left in him.

Shame about Rampage. Hope he gets his head on straight :(

Favre deserves better from the Packers. The Packers deserve whatever they get from Aaron Rogers. Hopefully they'll cut Brett and let him play elsewhere.

Yeah, Rampage got lax in judgement with that incident. Hopefully he'll get his stuff together and get that championship back. On Farve, I don't know if I'll be able to see him playing for another team. If he does though, no better team than your rival oppponent in Minnesota.

No way on Favre. Favre has brought this on himself. It's not fair to the Packers and it's especially not fair to Aaron Rodgers. This is what, the 3rd time he's called it quits? 4th maybe? In fact, the Packers were ready to fly out to meet him earlier this offseason when he had mentioned he might be coming back. Then he called them off. I don't consider the Packers to be a legitimate contender with Favre at qb, so why bring him back? Hell, it's not like he's a top 5 qb. He's probably not even top 10. Just let the young guy play so you can see what you've got and if it turns out that he sucks, get a new qb.

Brett Favre's a generational type player - who the heck is Aaron Rogers, I mean (Allen Iverson voice) Aaron Rogers, we're talkin' about Aaron Rogers.

In all seriousness, if the Packers are about winning this season, which they should be - they should be all over Favre right now.

Perhaps, but the way Farve pulled the retirement card the way he did. He really didn't think it through and now has put more pressure on Green Bay's FO and Aaron Rodgers. Truly either way, Rodgers is in the most pressurize situation to where if he screws up at certain crucial times(and he will make some mistakes), The Cheeseheads will chew Rodgers out like tobacco and wear him out. Good luck to Rodgers in GB that he'll weather the brewing storm in the upcoming season.

BTW, did anyone get the chance to check out The Dark Knight?

A lot of ppl said the movie was great as expected. I'm lookin to hit the movie between now and the weekend since the tickets have been hard to get. The Dark Knight has gotten more attention with Christian Bale gettin arrested in London for possible assault. Despite that, the movie is still full steam ahead.
