Rewind: If we still had Shelden Williams

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Jul 7, 2008 6:31 pm

No Mike Bibby, no playoffs, so a giant hole would still be at the point and Acie still needs another year or two (Let's hope) to develop. So, how do you think the point guard situation would be handled this off-season if the trade never happened? Take into account that Tyronn Lue and Anthony Johnson became free agents.

The trade:

Mike Bibby to Atlanta:

Shelden Williams, Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue and Lorenzen Wright and a second-round pick to Sacramento

I would hope that Childress would have been dealt for whatever kind of draftpick they could have gotten at the deadline (to remove his almost 12 million dollar caphold) and the Hawks made a serious run at Jose Calderon.

If you want to know salaries and numbers before the Bibby trade, you can look at the second half of this post: Link

First I would be a "one more year" sad Hawks fan ;)
Then, I would expect a run at Calderon too.

Keep it updated. When the new update took place the sticky disappeared.

If Shelden was here we certainly wouldn't have to worry about the luxury tax and a SNT deal involving Childress would be much easier.

we would have had to put a max offer on the table for calderon. toronto matches.

josh smith would force a trade

mike woodson would have been fired

i can't think of a FA that would want to come here.

we would have to resign anthony johnson. tyron lue would leave

in all the roster would be:

pg- johnson/law/claxton
sg- johnson/carney*
sf- williams/childress/west
pf-horford/williams/jones
c- pachulia/evans*

we would be looking at the top five pick in the lottery.

That's true, and I'm not the hugest Bibby fan in the world, but getting a starting point guard outweighes keeping a back-up PF in our case.

EDIT: I meant PF, not SF.

If we still had Shelden Williams . . . food wouldn't taste as good, the sun wouldn't be as bright, and we wouldn't have gotten to experience playoff basketball for the first time since 1999.

Oh, we would have made the playoffs; we were 500 with Bibby, we would probably have made it without him. And since Bibby didn't show up for the playoffs, maybe we still might have won 3 games. ;)

It can't be assured, but extrapolating the record without Bibby for the whole season and we wind up 36-46 which would have tied Indiana for 8th/9th. The problem is they would have had the tie breaker against us, so the simplest analysis is we miss the playoffs. Can't say for sure if we win more, less, or the same for sure though.

If we go ahead with AJ/Lue/Law at PG we do not make the playoffs. The wheels were coming off with that trio running the team. We had to make a move.

The other thing if we still had Shelden Williams is that there would be a lot of jokes about how we'd be better off with his girlfriend. At least she's got her own signature shoe and can dunk reliably.

Not trading Shelden(especially after putting up good numbers in meaningless games like other scrub rookies like Terrance Kinsey/Mardy Collins/Walter Hermann)after drafting Horford was one of BK's dumbest mistakes other than drafting him in the 1st place. We knew he would be 3rd string but let him sit on the bench for 3 months so his value would deterioate. I'd do the Bibby for Shelden trade 10/10 but that was a salary dump for Sac. Shelden has even less value as a player to them than he does to us. They have Miller/Hawes/Moore and now they just reached on another big man to take playing time away from him. I believe Shelden was only involved because he was picked 5th(even if he didnt deserve to)and was a name to make it look like they weren't getting rid of Bibby for nothing. Has Sac even picked up his 4th year option yet?
