Two of the premier players of the 1998 draft class, who would you rather have?

To build around? Or just in general? From 1998?

This shows why Pierce is getting overrated and is certainly not the "most underrated player in the history of the NBA" as another OP had it.

Dirk is a shoe in for the HOF w/o a title. Pierce needed a title just to be a marginal HOFer.

Close. Pierce's stock went through the roof this year with the title.

Dirk takes this career wise.

WARNING: Homer pick coming up.

Dirk is obviously the more special and talented player, but IMO Pierce is quite clearly the player to take. What good is all that talent Dirk has if he collapses when the money is on the table? Put both on the same team and usually Dirk will get that team more rgular season wins, but put both on a title contender and Pierce can carry them to a title, Dirk, as far as we know, can't.

This is pretty close. I'll take Dirk though. He's really had one bad playoff series, among many very good playoff series. And he's led his team to 50 wins many, many times. It's dirk for me.

Can you imagine the Celtics with Dirk instead of Pierce? Hell - I'd take Dirk/KG over the Celtic's current big 3.

When has Dirk ever had teammates at the level Garnett and Allen? At least Dirk led is team to the finals and won 67 games (despite the 1st round exit), in the West no less. Before Pierce got Garnett and Allen, he didn't do squat.

If you gave Dirk Allen and KG to play with, I guarantee that team would win titles.

Yup, Dirk hasn't had the luxury of being the second best player on his own team, so you can't really hold the championship against him :-/

Dirk IMO also plays a more premier position in the NBA (PF/Situational C) and plays it in a fashion that makes him an extreme mismatch for many teams.

Paul Pierce

More versatile player, and his impact on the game won't drop off as much when he's not scoring well.

Dirk, in all situations, except in the clutch (which is obviously huge). Although he's not nearly as bad in the last few minutes as people make him out to be.

^Dirk is one of the most clutch players in the game.
