great post tsherkin. I think Kerr is trying to establish that the phx suns are commiting to defense by hiring porter. I think he really can make any blockbuster trade because the current suns core needs to gel more. I do agree they need a defensive force in the paint and I dont think robin lopez is the answer not even close. I also think that the suns need to establish a defensive identity then find players that can thrive with that scheme. Boston, houston, SA are defensive teams that have different defesive identities and I think once the suns figure out what type of defense they would like to play then they can trade for players that can make those defensive schemes possible.
tsherkin, if you were Kerr who would you go after? I heard artest name going around but he is kinda bit of a loose cannon. Marcus Camby would be nice but he is injured all the time and he DPOY but his defensive impact in denver is no existent.

Re: SUNS HIRE PORTER
Lopez is a decent start but the first problem is addressing Amare and Nash as defensive liabilities, which is why I'm worried about the lack of Paul Silas. If Bill Cartwright can make Amare not suck at man defense, that'd be outstanding but the team needs a coherent defensive scheme to which it can adhere as a unit that will help overcome it's individual deficiencies and that's on Porter.
I wouldn't touch Camby with a 10-foot pole but if Artest could be had, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Loose cannon or not, the man can play the game quite well. Wouldn't mind Beno Udrih, though, for shooting and backing up Nash (and helping Nash play fewer games and fewer minutes, too).
