Definition of Greatness

Post#1 » by Neal04 » Tue Jul 8, 2008 12:04 am

What really defines a player to be considered a legend?

Is it his numbers?
The players demeanor on and off the court?
The players ability to take over in the clutch?
How they deal with the media?
How many championships they win?
If they can take their game to the next level in the playoffs?
Willing to sacrifice for the benefit of the team?
Work ethic?
Never say die attitude?

Those are just some of the things I came up with at the top of my head. I was wondering what your definition of greatness is and what player best fits that definition.

Don't forget awesome highlights and clutch/defining moments. Lots of fans base their opinions of players on these things.

The most important thing about Greatness is the winning. 2nd ingredient is domination of opponents via great stats and ability to become clutch. 3rd ingredient is swagger and attitude. This points to ballers like Jordan, Kobe, Bill Russell, Shaq and Timmy D.

it's all he say/she say. Charles Barkley is a legend to some and a chump to others. I see Baron Davis as a legend. I'm gonna remember him bringing excitement to my dead warriors team for a few good years. Its all what the people think

"Greatness" is too subjective to definitively define.

My personal interpretation is someone who leaves an everlasting (and positive) impression on his/her craft.

I can't remember who said it, but to me this is a great definition for not just greatness, but for being an all-time great
"the ability to do things that have never been done before, do things in a way that no one has ever done before, or simply defy logic/physics in order to help his team win"

Greatness is when you can't imagine the game without this certain great.

Winning with huge stats.
Being a pivotal cog in the development of the game.
Being known to non-fans.

Personally mine is when that player can have a effect on the game even after he retires. Another thing is that when a casual fan or a non-fan recognizes that name and could tell you who they are.

Greatness is only how a person interprets it, its different for everyone. As millertime said its too subjective to definitively define.
