MIN/PHI Rumor from both yahoo and ESPN

Post#1 » by 4ho5ive » Tue Jul 8, 2008 9:23 am

Apparently we are close to dealing for Rodney Carney and Calvin Booth with the TPE (shrinks favorite) of Mark Blount, but it is unknown what incentives are in it for us. In order for Philly to make a run at either Josh Smith or EB. We should be getting a 1st round pick is the speculation

Really good move for us. Both are expirings, and Rodney Carney is young and could be a good player for us (Nice defensive tandem with Brewer). The fact we would get yet another 1st rounder only makes the deal sweeter.

I love the idea of adding both players. Carney can tear it up from outside, in college, and could push Brewer and McCants to be better...if not, it just adds another trading piece. To me, adding Booth would a great help...almost Theo like. He's not the same player at all really, but I think a vet big man is exactly what this team needs. We lost Theo, presumily Doleac....I like the idea of adding a vet big for practically free. Carney was one of my favorite college players, and he could help spread the floor even more with McCants, Miller, and Foye...I would do this deal asap.

McHale's MIA trade gets even awesomer:

Mark Blount + Ricky Davis

for

Doleac (exp) + Simien (exp) + Walker (part of Mike Miller) + Booth (exp) + Carney (2 yr at $2 mil) + MIA 1st + PHI 1st?

I love this trade, though I am not shocked by it. McHale is picking exactly the right time to trade the TPE when it will have the most value, as GM's dream of star free agents like Brand and Josh Smith. I was impressed last year when they used the TPE to get the Spurs under the cap, but by waiting to see what other moves they wanted to make, they were only able to use the TPE's to generate more cash. However, I suppose I can't complain, since they were waiting on the MIA deal.

Adding $2.8 mil in salary this year shouldn't overly strain our room under the lux to bring back Gomes and an essential back-up PG, but I think this may be bad news for Craig Smith returning unless he comes dirt cheap.

Booth can fill a role here, and Carney was a #16 pick, and PHI used to be pretty high on him.

One final comment. Adding Carney may make McCants even more tradable. Over on the trade board, you rarely hear anyone ask about him because his perceived value is so low. However, lately, one team has been mentioning him to solve their three-point shooting woes, and that team is PHI. With Mike Miller on the Wolves, they now have three of the top 15 players in 3P% who score 10+ PPG, so MIN can afford to give up the three's (and add Carney).

Nice job McHale -- I hope this goes through.

BTW, my price to trade that TPE to LAC just went up. MIN future 1st or bust.

Great deal for MN if it goes through. I could even see Booth being bought out to make sure we have rosster spots for Gomes/Smith. I dont want to get my hopes up on Carney though....he hasnt shown much but we're not giving anything up for him so obviously the price is right. The real prize is the draft pick....hopefully Philly doesnt land Brand and the pick is decent.

I'd also point out that the future 1st is mentioned in the yahoo article, but not the ESPN article.

If Philly is giving up a future 1st, I hope its not the one they are owed from Utah, since its one of the most complicated pick protections I've ever heard about. Utah also has a pick owed to them from New York, so the protection goes like this:

loserX wrote: The workings are quite complicated and cumbersome, but the upshot is this:

In 2009, the New York pick to Utah is top-22 protected. The Utah pick to Philadelphia is also top-22 protected. If both picks end up outside the protection, Philadelphia gets the better one.

In 2010, the New York pick to Utah is unprotected. The Utah pick to Philadelphia is top-15 protected. Assuming both picks are still outstanding and Utah's pick falls outside its protection, Philadelphia gets the worse one.

(The Utah pick to Philadelphia is also protected for 2011-2013...if it still hasn't been transferred by that point, the Sixers get Utah's 2014 second rounder and cash instead.)

And yes, this was all agreed to in the Korver trade.

Man - just make it the Philly pick, even if Brand puts it in the 20's.

And you know, if we collect every team's 2009 1st, some of them have to lead to good players!

Excellent move! It likely would be the end of C. Smith in Minnesota, however.

This helps us strategically too, reducing the strength of two teams ahead of us in the West.

GSW dropped by losing out on Baron Davis, and LAC drops if they paid all that money to Baron and can't pair him with Brand. We may be opening the door for POR, but maybe we can squeeze in too.

Trade rumors wake me up even more than coffee.

I could roll with this easily. Booth could at least get some minutes at C, and Carney's young. But even if they don't work out, they're gone after this season. The 1st, which I hope is included, would be nice to have.

That is interesting. I don't really think a first is smart from Philly's side, but I'm all for it.

I have to preface this by saying Mo Cheeks' daughter may or may not be my girlfriend. :)

Shrink you're all over the place this morning. I'm with you though-- I haven't even left my desk to get coffee this morning. I get in the office at 7 and I'm still glued to the forums.

My favorite things about this trade:

Carney has a team option for 09-10, and ANOTHER FREAKING FIRST ROUND PICK!

Well done, Wolves!

Seems like this would create a glut at the 2-3, though, doesn't it? I wonder if this means we would have to then move McCants... Otherwise Miller, McCants, Carney, Brewer, Gomes (pending resigning), and Cardinal are all sharing time at the 2 or 3. Even if Cardinal is riding pine, that's a lot.

Sounds pretty official to me:

Philadelphia 76ers forwards Rodney Carney, Calvin Booth and a future No. 1 pick have been traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves to free as much as $2 million in additional salary cap space for the Sixers to offer Elton Brand or Josh Smith, multiple league sources said.

Carney will need a new number. I think 25 might be taken.

Foye/Telfair/Summer Leaguer--(Ahearn, Neitzel)
McCants/Carney
Miller/Brewer
Jefferson/Gomes/Cardinal
Love/Collins/Richard

Booth and Madsen won't see time or activity. In fact, Booth being bought out outright wouldn't surprise me.

That leaves us a couple extra roster spots, actually. Richard could see more D-league time, as well as our third string point.

If they don't get Brand or Smith that will be a very, very good first round pick. Somewhere in the middle of the first 10-20. If Igoudala, then moves to G-State, or to even the Clippers, then all hell will break loose.
