The thing is the owner is the boss, the GM has to do whatever the owner says or else he's gone. Some owners really care about making a profit, they would even sacrifice making the Playoffs if it meant they would be losing money. Other owners don't care as much.

One thing you're all forgetting: Superstars/Stars never get fair value in a trade. These lists are not bad if you're making a top players list, but if you're talking about what kind of value you're gonna get for these players, then these lists need to look a lot different.

No, you're wrong.

The GM's job is to get the right players to win. Winning generates money because you put asses in seats and making the playoffs is a big revenue generator for teams. Owners rarely make the moves. They are only consulted on the financials. For example, are we willing to go into the luxury tax? How much would x cost vs y? Can we spend the full MLE? The owners only have a say in the trades to the extent that they pay the bills. By far and away, an owner will hire a GM and let him do his thing. That's the expert, after all. If you're paying him to make the decisions yourself, you're an idiot. An owner's way of fixing a bad GM is to fire him and get a new one.

Nothing of what you wrote contradicts Storm Surge's point... the owner has the final say, for the exact reason that he can be fired if he doesn't. Of course, most owners don't take a very proactive role in their team's management, but some (Cuban, for instance) do. Even the most passive owner, however, would never acquiesce to trading Yao Ming, because of the enormous revenue that he brings in.

How much revenue do you think Yao generates for his actual franchise? Are there really that many Chinese people in Houston?

Let's be honest...Yao makes a lot more money for the NBA than he does for the Rockets. The majority of the places where you could bring in international bread would go through the NBA revenue sharing. I don't see how you get the money directly from the hands of Chinese citizens to the Houston Rockets. International television rights proceeds are received by NBA Properties and then disbursed to teams (per the CBA), as are most other special events and sponsorships.

Duncan is 32 and KG is 31. Not suprising why he is ahead of them, even if he never turns out to be as good as them.
