FL Today: Magic in pursuit of Corey Maggette

Post#1 » by drsd » Tue Jul 8, 2008 5:39 pm

General manager Otis Smith said his Orlando Magic are still very much in the running for free agent Corey Maggette, but the team is prepared in the event the coveted shooting guard signs elsewhere.

The Magic have made contact with Maggette’s representatives and have made it known that they would be willing to offer their full Mid-Level Exception (approximately $5.8 million).

Maggette is also being courted by the San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors.

"We’ve got a chance at him, but what chance I’m just not really sure,’’ Smith said.

I just finished listening to Ric Bucher babble on about how much Corey Maggette is actually worth per year, he said he's worth $15-$18 million a year...He believes that Corey should receive a no less than a 5 year $40 million dollar deal, and based on today's salaries per performance, that's a slight bargain...

:o

Well, that is about all Smith can do.

Way to go Otis ..... all we can ask is that he at least try. Win lose or draw I am finally glad to hear the effort is being made.

It annoys me when people bash Otis for not trying etc... The thing is he is very quite about what he does, which makes it seem like he does nothing. I think since he is a newer GM others dont know much about him, and they pefer not to deal with him. But I agree with you Surf I give him props for making it be known we are still in the hunt. And I think it is good that this was announced for others to realize our GM is right there with the rest of them.

Looks like this is going to depend on what Brand does...I think we offer him the best situation after Golden State ..He starts here with a young.. up and coming team. Would end up in the ECF with him this year. Where out west he might not even make the playoffs..

Otis has been making an effort to make this team better his whole tenure as Magic GM.. people just get pissed when things dont work out... But he's done all he can to get the most coveted free agent on the market right now, there's nothing more anyone can ask of him. And if we don't get him (which we wont) it's not like we are a bad team... we'll be okay.

There's already been reports about him trying.

If a tree falls in the forest ...

or

If Otis makes a move and it's not reported, do people think he has make any effort?

Offering Corey the MLE is a no brainer. He be run out of town if he didn't at least do that. The greatness of a Gm is not built on the no brain moves. Any ballboy on this board could say hey lets offer Corey the MLE.

The question about Otis is he to close to the players on this roster. He has shown willingness to throw money in free agency. Is Otis to close to other players on this roster to actually trade them.

Doing something would have been using those expirings over the last few years. Even Otis admits that he could have made a move this deadline but it would have meant not using the MLE now. Yet now we talking about splitting the MLE. I have a feeling we could have received much better value with all those expiring contracts than splitting the MLE in a pretty thin free agent class.

Matt Steinmetz of Examiner.com:

First off, Maggette is injury prone. He's been in the league nine seasons and has played 70 or more games just four times in his career. Maggette's body says Iron Man; his stats say Tin Man.
Maggette is a great sub, the kind of aggressive scorer you love coming off the bench. He has a shoot first mentality and is a mediocre defender at best. In other words, as a sixth man he's great, as a starter he's not.
Maggette has made it clear he wants to start and be a primary offensive option. But he's the type of high-maintenance player who doesn't make teammates better. In fact, because he doesn't create much, there tends to be a lot of standing around when he's got the ball on the perimeter.
Maggette has never played for a winner. His teams have missed the playoffs in eight of the nine seasons he's been in the league. The one year a Maggette team made the playoffs was in 2006, when the Clippers made it to the postseason. That year Maggette played 32 games.
Corey Maggette at three years, $16 or $17 million or so ... maybe. Corey Maggette at five years for $40 million? No way.

Also worth noting: The team that knows him best is apparently willing to let him go for cap space, while almost no team with big money to spend has made him their main target in free agency.
