Around the Interim: What's in Store?

Post#1 » by Basketball Jesus » Wed Jun 18, 2008 8:45 pm

"The phoenix hope, can wing her way through the desert skies, and still defying fortune's spite; revive from ashes and rise.” - Cervantes

Granted, it's more of a woodsy Northwestern sky, but there's hope nonetheless:

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/player ... 30&id=2515

The Daily Herald reports that the Mariners plan on releasing Richie Sexson.

Interim GM Lee Pelekoudas held meetings with club executives on Tuesday to discuss the final 3 1/2 months of the season, and according to one person familiar with the planned moves, Sexson will be let go within days. Miguel Cairo is Sexson's backup, but he's actually a downgrade. Kenji Johjima has been putting in work at first following the news that Jeff Clement will now catch most games.

Two things to take from this:

1. It's great to see the owners realizing something has to be done at the field level. For all the bad Bavasi did to this team, there is still a great deal of culpability on the part of the players. If Sexson needs to be the sacrificial lamb, so be it.

2. Clement..."catch most games"! *Insert heavenly chorus*

Let the blood-letting commence! Sexson..get rid of him. We can probably wait on the manager till the off-season, but I would certainly hope the higher ups will let the new GM get his own man in there. If Mc stays, that would be a bad sign to me, one that suggests that the new GM is on too short of a leash.

BBJ, I'd like to buy you a drink this summer, a fine single malt of your choosing. I'll be in Beantown towards the end of July.

Awesome! What brings you out this way? College-hunting?

No. All squared away in that department. My wife bought me a surprise plane ticket to Boston and back for my birthday to visit my sister, brother in law, nieces, nephews, and a few old friends there. I will probably be spending most of my stay out there in New Hampshire at their summer cabin on a lake; but I'll have a day or two in Beantown to kick around, eat a few grinders, drink, get a little artsy-fartsy....drink some more.

That’s a rather thoughtful birthday present. Whereabouts in NH are you staying?

Oh, and if you do plan on drinking in Boston, stay away from the Cheers bar in Faneuil Hall. Boston Beer Works has great food but all they serve on tap is their in-house product (they also sell wine). Their beer isn’t anything special outside of their Watermelon Ale, which is perhaps the greatest mass-consumption summer beer ever crafted.

In theory he was. In practice, not so much.

If both Clement and Johjima have to be in the lineup, in the short term they're better off with Clement at 1B and Johjima at catcher. Of course, the plan is to build for the future, and it's best to keep Clement's catching skills moving forward.

I would say there needs to be a massive roster blood-letting that starts with Sexson and also includes Cairo, Bloomquist, Vidro and Jamie Burke. Five players who should be DFA'd and, presumably, released in 10 days. Call Wlad the Impaler back up along with Victor Diaz, Oswaldo Navarro, Bryan Lahair, and perhaps Charlton Jimerson. (Checking up on Tacoma stats....) Okay, forget Navarro and make it Tug Hulett.

I don’t know how much a positional switch affects hitting* but, if both are going to be in the line-up regardless, it doesn’t really matter what position they play, does it? Clement at first and Johjima at catcher or Johjima at first and Clement at catcher isn’t going to prevent either from seeing their obligatory 4 AB per game.

Plus, I think this move (i.e. Johjima to first) is better in the short-term. They get better defense at first and an upgrade (Vidro to Sexson) at DH.

I’m with you on everybody except Bloomquist. He’s a negative force as a hitter but the dude can play every position…even catcher. As a late-inning defensive substitute and emergency short-term fill-in, you can do much worse for your 25th man.

I am a bit hesitant on the promotions as well. Diaz and Navarro (for his defense) are logical call-ups and I think Jimerson’s already 40-manned but Wlad really needs to work on his hitting and he just wasn’t getting it done in Seattle. Unlike Clement, who never got a proper chance early on, Balentien received 117 PAs and really hasn’t proven much. I know I’m one of his biggest detractors but I still think Wlad can become a serviceable MLBer. He just needs to hone his game. Clement, on the other hand, is as polished as they come.

We should also see what this kid can do.

*A few years back Jason Giambi made a huge stink about playing DH, saying he hits much better when he’s playing at first. Lo and behold it was sort of true; his OPS was something like 265 points higher when he was in the game at first.

My point was only that, right now, Johjima is a better defensive catcher than Clement.

Yeah, but how much does catcher defense really affect a game? I’d rather see Clement build on his progression by seeing time behind the plate rather than all his hard work go for naught at first. I think in this instance the short-term benefits of Clement at catcher parlay into the long-term benefits of the club. If Clement can’t hack it, the Mariners will know they’ll have to work in his bat elsewhere next season. If he does a good job, they have their franchise catcher.

I really think, if Clement shows what’s expected of him, something will happen with Johjima this offseason, whether it is a positional move or a trade or whatever.

One of those lakes near "Golden Pond". I lived in the Boston area for awhile after I got out of college. Lived in Somerville, not far from Mass Ave/Porter Square/the Yard. Who knows how long I might have lived there if I hadn't fallen in love/lust with a Swede/French woman who was travelling the states, and put up in Boston by my roommate who knew some friends of her's in France.

What's this I just heard on KJR about the Mariners wanting to speak with a woman GM candidate? I didn't catch the name, they just said it in a newsbreak and played a short clip of her speaking.

Good for her!

One letter off. Kim Ng. She's considered one of the brightest baseball minds in a major-league FO.

And you should post more on here, Jenn.

^I think that the hiring would be interesting...I'm not familiar with her skills although they are tied for first in their division. I guess that's something. Is she young? Like a Sam Presti of the MLB?

And thanks for the kind words, PNF. I used to be a big M's fan, but I'll admit, I'm more of a casual fan these days. Basketball is pretty much my one and only love. But I will pop in here every now and then, probably even more now.

The day a woman is running my team is the day I stop following the Mariners for a while. No offense to the ladies out there, but I dont want it happening.
