Sixers traded Carney to T-Wolves

Post#1 » by fo_o_fo_404 » Tue Jul 8, 2008 8:58 pm

Philly just freed up even more cap spaces to throw more money at Smoove.

By freeing up this money, Philly can offer a starting salary of $14 million.

Ouch....this hurts!! And on the heels of the salary cap numbers being released. Philly is seriously making moves!

Carney is actually a solid young piece to me. Let's remember that the Sixers might be creating the cap space to make a play for Brand.

If Brand goes to the sixers (which is still think is highly unlikely) I wonder if the Clippers would go after Smith. THey would have max caproom as well even after signing Baron.

this is from the Hollinger chat today on ESPN...

Mayank (Philadelphia, PA): If the 76ers clear $15 million in cap space and FAIL to sign Elton Brand, will they throw the kitchen sink at PF Josh Smith and do the Hawks have the stones to match an offer starting at $15 million per year?

John Hollinger: Yes, that's the plan, and kudos to Sixers GM Ed Stefanski -- I had thought he'd need to trade Andre Miller to create enough space, but he found a different path that worked. I suspect the Hawks would still match Smith, but obviously it's a different equation at $15 mil than it is at $12 mil. And one other thing -- if the Hawks match Smith, Stefanski can go after both Maggette AND Childress with his cap war chest if he so chooses.

Ric Bucher just said on ESPN that if Elton signs with the Sixers the Clippers would, in fact, come after Josh Smith with all their cap money

Ric Bucher also said that Kobe Bryant had absolutely played his last game in LA and Amare was going to come to ATL but our ownership didn't want him because Ric Bucher is, in fact, a moron.

If Brand goes to Philly, the Warriors will go after Smith also - and they have more $$ than the Clips.

Can they? If so, why couldn't they offer the max to Elton Brand? I guess if they lose the cap holds for Brand and Maggette maybe they have enough space, but it seems like if they renounced some free agents they could have offered Brand more. I just have trouble believing that Sterling opens the checkbook wide for Josh Smith and wouldn't for Elton Brand.

I think they could have offered Brand more- I think they just thought he was bluffing and wouldn't actually leave. like i said- no clue if the Clippers would actually throw major dollars at Smith.

i was under the impression they waived their bird rights to Brand and could only offer him a 5 year 70 million dollar deal... I don't think they could or would offer Smith any more, I could be wrong
