With the re-signing of Augustine at $700k, and Pietrus deal rumoured to be starting at $5.2m, the Magic are at roughly $64.7m, with 3 roster spots to fill. They could easily re-sign Dooling for $3.5 - $4m per year, and leave themselves with enough wiggle room to sign 2 minimum salary guys to fill out the roster and not hit the luxury tax, which the Sentinel has reported they don't want to exceed.

Say Jason Williams at $1.3m (10+ years in the NBA) and Kwame Brown on $1.1m (7 years), and Dooling on a multi year starting at $3.5m, and that would leave us with a roster of

Nelson, Dooling, Williams
Pietrus, Lee, Redick
Turkoglu, Bogans
Lewis, Battie, Cook, Augustine
Howard, Brown, Gortat

and a payroll of $70.6m. Pretty tight the the luxury tax threshold, but beneath it nonetheless, and with an improved roster from last year. They could maybe try to shed some salary if they do chose to trade Bogans or Redick, by taking back a player with a lesser salary in return. Obviously because of cap rules, they would only be able to shed a few hundred thousand because salaries have to match within 25%, but every little helps.

Edit: Left Cook out of the original roster list.

Actually no, those full salaries aren't included in team salary.

When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, ten-day or rest-of-season contract, the league actually reimburses the team for part of his salary - any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran. For example, in 2005-06 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is $719,373, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,138,500, the league would reimburse the team $419,127. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. They do this so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive when filling out their last few roster spots.

My numbers were about $600,000 off in terms of the tax.

Right now the Magic are about $5-$5.5 million from the luxury tax.

The scenario Mitchell gives is possible but you also have to remember there is no guarantee the tax will go up by the amount needed to re-sign Hedo Turkoglu and stay under next season.

O.T., but...
Love that Howard Mass is from my old Stomping grounds (Longwood)! Howard, I used to live off of Lake avenue behind the old Joe's Cuban cafe/Oasis cafe. I could leave my car parked at a neighbors and skip school anytime I wanted at Lyman as the curriculum was 2-5 years behind what I was learning when in Cali... Good times and hot girls!

O.T.:

I am actually close to where they redrew the school lines.

My area in the back of Wekiva still goes to Lake Brantley but the people living about 1-2 miles away in Sable Point now have to go on that conjested to Lyman.

Hope all is going well for you in California.
