Do it, Mitch! Sign Posey! Come on... please.
Then you can trade Luke and/or Radmanovic before the deadline.

Larry Bird exception
Perhaps the most well-known of the NBA's salary cap exceptions, it is so named because the Boston Celtics were the first team permitted to exceed the salary cap to re-sign one of their own players (in that case, Larry Bird). Free agents who qualify for this exception are called "qualifying veteran free agents" or "Bird Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception falls under the auspices of the Veteran Free Agent exception. In a nutshell, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination thereof. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. Bird-exception contracts can be up to six years in length. Your right Phil and dcash , thats why Luke's contract is so damn long.

Pierce Pushes For Posey
Jul 08, 2008 10:19 AM EST
Paul Pierce is lobbying for the Celtics to do whatever it takes to get valuable reserve James Posey back with the team next season, according to The Boston Herald.
"He’s just huge for us," Pierce said Monday. "And if you’ve got to spend extra, I probably would."
He also understands where Posey is coming from as a player.
"You’ve got to understand the position ‘Pose’ is in. I mean, he’s 31 years old, and this is probably going to be the last contract he’s going to get, so I guess he’s looking for a little extra security - maybe a little more than we’re willing to give him," Pierce added. "But hopefully we can retain him and he can look at what we offer him as a sense of security."
Damnit!

Pierce also doesn't want to have to play against him.
Mitch!!! Please, come on, man. Offer him the MLE.
We need someone strong to stop Pierce, LBJ, Butler etc. That's our biggest need. Without a player like that, another championship will be lost next June, if we get there. Right now, we simply don't have an answer to him on this roster. Well, that is, if moving Odom to the three doesn't take care of it. On every other position, we can compete. At SF, we can't. Defense, defense, defense!
EDIT: If we can't get him, we should still look into getting a bruiser that can handle switches. Najera is another player we should consider if we can't get Posey. We need that physical guy on this team!

You guys actually want Posey for the full MLE for five years? You realize that is 7.2 million for a 36 year old Posey; 7.7 million in the final year for a guy that will be 37.

We only said the Lakers are willing to offer the full MLE, we did not say they will offer a contract for 5 years(at least I hope Mitch isn't that dumb).

That is what Posey has supposedly been offered and is the only thing he will accept.
