You have Knicks in the top 10? Fail.

They won 2 championships, numerous Finals appearances, one of the richer and longer histories of any NBA franchise. I don't see what's wrong with putting them in the top 10.

Also, Golden State and Washington in the bottom? They won more championships than Utah ever has (1 apiece) - Golden State has won 3 if you count the Philadelphia Warriors.

Also, I'd rank Bulls 3rd behind Boston and LA, above the 76ers

The last time I saw it, the Sixers had exactly 2 rings. MJ alone has 6. Also the Bucks are higher than the Jazz, at least they got rings and had these guys named Kareem and Oscar.

The Hawks have to be in the top 10. Between 1955 and 2000, they had only missed the playoffs 9 times. Only recently have they had major troubles. Don't forget Bob Petit and Dominique Wilkins.

Numerous title runs, HoFers, prolonged dominance
1. Celtics
2. Lakers

Multiple titles, Some HoFers, good for certain periods:
3. Bulls
4. 76ers
5. Pistons

Good Franchise win% and many playoff appearances, at least 1 championship, strong history:

6. Spurs
7. Knicks
8. Hawks
9. Rockets

They there is another drop off after the 9th best team.

Bottom five
Clippers, Nets, Cavs, Mavs, Nuggets

Trying to rank teams, it becomes how uneven the history of the NBA is. The Celtics and Lakers are clearly well above the other franchises. The next three are slightly above anybody else. If the Suns win just one or two titles, their strong win% vaults them into the top ten, same with the Jazz.

Weird.

My list would go as such.

I live in the now...

1. San Antonio- They are always contenders
2. Detroit- See #1
3. Utah- A great coach, solid core, and one of the deepest rosters with potential.
4. LA Lakers- Another great coach, the best player in the game, and they are close to a 'ship.
5. Portland- What a turnaround. Should be an eventual contender over the next decade.
6. Boston- Yes they just won it all, but I feel a short lived honeymoon for the big three.
7. New Orleans- When healthy they can run with anyone and have one of the best coaches today.
8. Dallas- If Rick Carlisle can right the ship this the Mavs are a top 5 franchise with their talent.
9. Toronto- Colangelo has worked magic, but there are still questions.
10. Houston- Getting Scola was key, and now with Adelman at the helm and a healthy Yao it could get interesting.
- On the bubble: Phoenix and Orlando

25. Minnesota- Forfeitted draft picks, losing KG for next to nothing, having a franchise in Minny, etc.
26. Sacramento- They have 400 undersized power forwards, Ron Artest and an inexperienced coach.
27. Milwaukee- Hiring Skiles and changing GM's are positive moves, but they are still a mess.
28. Memphis- A franchise that has never gotten out of the first round of the playoffs.
29. New York- The Mecca of basketball, really?
30. LA Clippers- Kudos to Donald Sterling.
- On the bubble: Chicago and Seattle

Portland should be your tenth pick, I think. One championship with an all-time great team, Walton, Lenny Wilkens, Drazen Petrovic and Drexler in the HoF. Multiple WCF/Finals appearances outside of the championship. On top of that, the all-time consecutive sell-out record for professional sports in the US was established in Portland with 814 straight, and Portland also had 21 straight playoff appearances before this recent poor streak and jail blazer era started (the latter is over officially now with Darius Miles' medical retirement, the former has a good shot at ending this season). Finally, add in the richest owner in pro sports, and you have a franchise that definitely belongs up there in your top 10. Maybe not higher than the Knicks, but higher than the Hawks for sure (and I would suggest that the Spurs should be up higher as well).

You live in the "now", so you put the "now" NBA champions number five? Oh, ok.

If you live in the "now", why do you cite "potential" for some of your top ten?

Suns have 2 title appearances. The Mavs 1. The Sucs have been around since 1969 (the entire time in the NBA) and have a .558 win% (fourth all-time). The Mavs have been around since 1981 and have a .487 win%. The Suns made the playoffs 28 times in 40 years (so they missed 12 times). The Mavs have made the playoffs 14 times in 28 years (missing the playoffs as often as making it, and missing the playoffs more times than the Suns despite not being in existence for as long). There is a big difference between the two teams. The only thing holding the Suns out of the top ten is the lack of a couple of championships.

Warriors shouldn't be that low. IMO they're around the 10-16 range. They have more championships than pretty much most of the other teams in the league not named the Celtics, Lakers or Bulls.

Milwuakee should be up there too, the Bucks of 80s are extremely underrated; they finished first in the Central Division for 6 consecutive seasons too.
