elton brand, carlos boozer, and disloyalty

Post#1 » by Lost Angel » Wed Jul 9, 2008 8:35 pm

if Boozer is a bad guy for turning his back on Cleveland, then Elton Brand has to be in the same category.

Brand is even worse if Philly's offer is only 1 million dollars more than the Clippers.

LA went out of their way for Brand, put the exact team he needed him around him to excel in place, and then outta nowhere he bails. If he thinks the East is easier to win in, then he must have never heard of Lebron or the Celtics

We're already doing this thread on the Player Comparison board (which is worse?).

there are multiple reports that Brand grew disillusioned when the Clippers failed to even try to match Golden State's offer.

In other words, they were taking advantage of him being a nice guy and trying to lowball him.

They finally only sort of matched the Philly offer at the eleventh hour... long after him and his agent were upset.

Face it, the Clippers are douche employers. I'd have done the same thing.

I would EXPECT the Clippers to immediately match Golden State's offer. I'm shocked they didn't. Elton did nothing wrong.

The Clippers lowballed him... what do you expect?

I don't see how anyone can blast the guy when you don't even have a clue on what went on. If he did or didn't promise to sign with the Clippers if Davis signed then that's one thing. But it's not even a known fact if that was the case and that would be against league rules wouldn't it? So until Baron Davis comes out and says Elton Brand lied to me I think this is much to do about nothing. Plus Baron Davis is free to sign with anyone still if he wishes he isn't locked into the Clippers who are obviously not a better team than the 76ers. There was also a rumor that Sterling lied to Brand about how much they could offer by lowballing him at first then when the 76ers came into it they had more money.

Yes it would be against league rules.

By all indications, BEFORE all this started he mentioned Davis as ONE of the guys who the Clippers should pursue to make the team better.

Apparently the Clippers took that to mean "Hey, as long as we get Davis, we can treat Elton like crap by lowballing him and refusing to even try to match the other offers he's getting".

And if that rumor you mention is true, then I have absolutely zero sympathy for the Clippers. Hate employers who play games like that.

Well Brand just said in his presser that he did not have any handshake type agreement with Baron Davis. Then Faulk started talking about the Clippers and there owner not being willing to discuss the deal and it was a take it or leave it type thing the way they went at Brand and Faulk.

Why would the Clippers even expect loyalty from Brand? They ruined his career by being cheap and and making horrible draft selections. They let all their good players walk when they became free agents. They drafted players like Shaun Livingston and Yaroslav Korolev in the lottery. And they blocked Elton from signing with the team he wanted to play for. The Clippers have been screwing over Elton Brand for years. Elton just got his revenge.

They ruined his career? What star players did they not pay since Brand got here? They went after Kobe, Allen, Arenas...none of those guys wanted to come here. It's not like they were being cheap on purpose. Odom, Miller, Richardson...none of those guys wanted to come back and they aren't stars anyway. You take a look at Kaman, Mobley and Thomas and tell me they didn't overpay for at least Mobley and Thomas to come here via free agency. Sterling has not been cheap for years now. Give me a break.

The Clippers organization are the disloyal ones. After all those years of languishing in Clipper Hell, all that loyalty, what do they do? Take it or leave it offer that's way less than two other teams. Brilliant, Clippers, Brilliant.

That's not the point. It's what he said after becoming a free agent that makes him a jerk. All of that stuff about joining other all-stars to become like Boston went out the window the minute Golden State gave him $90 million. The Clippers F.O. are morons too for not renouncing contracts and trying to match at least Philly's offer at $80 mil from the very start but if he hadn't said anything about wanting to come back while giving the Clippers financial leeway, none of this would be an issue. He's a free agent and can go wherever he wants but he shouldn't have told the Clippers he intended to stay and possibly take less money when he really didn't. Is that so hard to understand?

I can't see why they would take a take it or leave it stance when everybody and their mother knows they could offer more. We don't really know for sure what exactly happened. I don't trust David Falk...

Make all the excuses you want. The fact of the matter is that year after year, Brand had a horrible team around him. It doesn't matter if they didn't get good players on purpose or not. It's still the Clippers management fault that Brand, one of the best power forwards in the game today, has wasted his whole career playing with crappy teammates. When Brand tried to join a different team because he was tired of playing for the cheap Clippers, they matched his contract and didn't let him leave. And instead of trying to please him after they blocked him from leaving, they continued with putting a horrible team around him.

Why should he show loyalty to the Clippers? What have the Clippers done for Brand except waste away his best years? Tell me why Brand should feel loyalty for the Clippers.

They should move the Clippers to Seattle. :)
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

Some Bulls fans don't want to acknowledge it, but Faulk & Brand pulled the same strong-arm crap that made Jerry Krause try and trade him for something better (and failing).

It's happened before.... but people fall for the "good guy" act to easy.

He agreed with the Clips FIRST, and they did eventually match, boo-hoo if his feelings were hurt-- that's the name of the negotiation game. He d*cked Baron Davis hard.

rumor has it clippers offered a slightly better deal, but brand's agent (falk) turned his phone off because he's still pissed about the clips picking olowokandi over his client (bibby) in the '98 draft
