OT: need computer help

Post#1 » by UCFJayBird » Thu Jul 10, 2008 1:02 am

Yesterday during the storm, we experienced a power outage in my neighborhood and were without power for 7 1/2 hours. We finally got it back on, and I went to turn on my computer and....nothing. :(

I fiddled with it all last night and then when I got home today. I took a power supply out of another computer I had and swapped it, and still a no go. So it's not the power supply. It could be the mother board, but a little light comes on the motherboard when I have the comp plugged in (though the machine won't turn on).

Anyone have any idea what may be the problem? Could it be the switch? lol.

I ended up taking my hard-drive, video & sound cards and put them in the other machine I have that I don't use and that's what I'm on right now. It's a little slower, so I'd like to get the other one back up and running. Any ideas? And if so, how do I go about testing it, or am I screwed into having to take it to someone with the right tools and know-how?

maybe a bad bios chip... those can go pretty quick in a power surge in a brownout or blackout.
out of difficulty comes opportunity.

The light on your mobo may be battery related..

When you power it on, do any fans start up?

Did you turn it off before your power went out, or did the computer come to a screetching halt which may've damaged a component.

EDIT: *waits for aleZ, LiteHedded, Glyde, maybe even ORL*

it doesn't turn on, so there is no beeps, it doesn't turn on, so there is no fans, lol. Basically, I plug it in, a green light on the motherboard is lit, but when I push the power button I get nothing.

Would the BIOS chips effect the power?

And the computer was on when the power went out. I had a surge protector, but it looks like that was pointless.

And now the motherboard I put all my components with (the one i started this thread with) isn't working so now i'm on another computer, lol. It wasn't reading the sound device so I tried to re-install my drivers from my bootup cd, and I don't know what went wrong but now it won't start up period. Says the system isn't fully installed. I think that one has a bad motherboard, though I don't know why it worked for a few minutes and then messed up when I tried to reinstall some drivers. *confused as hell*

Jeez, my car's broke, my computer's broke, i'm having surgery on Tuesday. Ugh. This month sucks already.

Do other items plugged into the strip work?

Have you tried the computer directly in the outlet?

Is there a fuse/breaker on the strip?

Typically the fans will spin even if the mobo is shot. Does the new PS have same mobo connector? Some times mobos need an extra power connection, sometimes it's on the connector and sometimes it's a separate 4 pin connector.

Agreed.

Not sure why hitting the power button is doing absolutely nothing; maybe you fried the daughterboard...?

mhec's implication that the new power source isn't working with your mobo sounds good as it sounds lik your old power source is dead.

It might also be that the replacement PS doesn't have sufficient power for your system?

I think any of the options that are left aren't pretty.

The MoBo's prolly wasted, a jump in the power output must've got to the inner chips before electricity went out, I'm afraid the only solution is getting another motherboard if everything's plugged in correctly and all other devices in the house work (when using the home's power source).

Good luck on your surgery and other stuff btw, we got an old saying around here "bad luck never comes alone" keep it up Willis :-?

Nice job reading.

ya I just skimmed it
if it doesn't post it's probably the motherboard
dumb question: when you swapped the ps was the switch in the on position on the new ps?
my next move would be a new mobo if I were troubleshooting it.

I really wish you the best of luck with your health, and hope you are fine.

Sorry I can't help with your computer, I'm a novice.
