I'm happy he's back because we really need a center bad....now Dampier can go back to the bench were he belongs.

You are wrong, they did use the entire MLE!

Diop rejoins Mavericks 6 months after trade
3 minutes ago

DALLAS (AP)—DeSagana Diop signed a five-year, $31 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, six months after Dallas sent him to New Jersey in the Jason Kidd trade.

The Mavericks used their entire midlevel exception in their second free-agent deal with Diop since 2005.

A lottery pick in Cleveland, Diop struggled before joining Dallas. He combined with Erick Dampier at center when the Mavericks reached the NBA finals in 2006 and won a franchise-record 67 games the next season.

Diop averaged 2.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 214 games, including 72 starts, with Dallas.

I'm sorry to be gruff, but on this board facts are paramount.

I don't understand. Speak up for the almost 40 year old men here ! Did Diop-Diop get Signed-and-Traded, just sign for the MLE, or just sign for less than the MLE?

The article doesn't clearly say, but it says he signed with the Mavs, so I would take that to mean the full MLE is now gone.

Bringing back Diop isn't the worst idea ever, but it seems they could've done the Kidd trade without including Diop somehow (obviously he wasn't a key piece for the Nets), and then they'd still have the MLE to address the bigger need at SG.

Hopefully Donnie has something up his sleeve still.

Isn't that basically what Cyberstorm said? No S&T for Diop, which there was not. No MLE, which is what the Mavs now have after giving ot to Diop.

I took the No MLE to mean that the team did NOT use the MLE on Diop. It was confusing to say the least.
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

The guy is capable of 2+ blocks a game. He has a sufficient Offensive Rebounding presence like Dampier does. He can cover Duncan and other athletic Bigs very well. He gives us a slightly different dimension at the center position than Damp brings to the table. Diop's overall stat sheet does not fully describe what he overall brings to the table. I am happy we signed him, just not for what we got him for. I felt he deserved $4 million a year (though some did not). He will be our starting center after Damp departs more than likely.

^^ Ya know what, in 3 or 4 years - it won't be so pricey... We'll have a bargain.

Hey I like Diop and I'm glad we got him too, but what I am wondering is, was this our biggest need and and spending basically all of our money to fill this spot does this get us any closer to being even just a top 4 team in the west. I think Diop will definitely add with his shot blocking and overall defense, I just dont know if there wasn't a better way to shape this team either at another position or spending our MLE in another direction even if it meant not getting Diop. Happy with the player just not the contract.

Well, you guys know what a big fan I am, and that I tend to be an apologist for the Mavs front office.

But this, I'm not so sure about. Without a trade, we just made our only available significant acquisition this offseason. Is Diop the player that puts us back in the picture? The combination of Diop and Damp was very effective for us a couple of years ago, no doubt about it. But really, does improvement in our post defense make us that much more of a contender? And are the two of them worth a combined $16 mil a year?

If we don't improve our guard rotation through a trade, I fear that we're going to waste another prime year of the best player that ever wore a Mavs uniform.

Maybe they're not through. I hope not.

I think I'm now officially depressed.

What can we get for vet min? Alonzo Mourning? Ruben Patterson?

C - Diop / Damp / Zo
PF - Dirk / Bass / FA
SF - Ruben / Stack / FA
SG - JoHo / Green / EJ
PG - Kidd / JET / JJB

That's a lot of toughness.

I dont understand why they let him go in the first place. I mean, if they always knew that he was an integral part of the team, why let him go as a filler in a trade and then sign him back after 4 months for the entire MLE?? that doesnt make sense, but hey, what do I know
I just hope the mavs arent done dealing

I was being Facetious. I know we used the MLE. The original poster was like, "Yaay, we signed Diop". I was pissed we did not pull off the S&T. My hope now is that we can pull a trade that sends Josh to Charlotte for Gerald Wallace. That would give us a bigger back court and Gerald is 2 years younger and a better defender and passer. Offensively they are identical.

I don't have a problem with Diop getting the MLE if it was for 3 years instead of 5. This FA class is so thin that there are few options that deserve that kind of money.
